So many more I’m looking forward to. Yo Ryan, no love for "Solo"? Or is it somewhere around your top 5? It’s a mix of “it’s just too strong” and “I’m not that into it,” so JW took its spot. It’s a great score, perfect production quality (I actually prefer Powell’s arrangement of Han’s theme to Williams’), and some nice new themes. But I just haven’t gravitated to it the way I hoped to, and not because it’s not Williams. The same thing happened with Rogue One, but a couple album listens fixed that. This one, I’ve listened to the album twice, I’m still familiarizing myself with new themes, but it hasn’t grabbed me, and at the time I thought “if it was going to, it would have already done it.” So I’m gonna try and give it another go before I solidify anything.

I don’t think I’ve stopped humming it or listening to it since. Great themes, Han’s is stellar, but I surprisingly gravitated to Chewie’s a lot (The second half of “Flying with Chewie” is pure magic). Perfect production value, and I honestly may have preferred Powell’s arrangements to Williams’. But best of all, it’s just the perfect encapsulation of the wonder, heart, excitement, suspense, fun, and the great storytelling I expect out of one of these scores. Not everybody can emulate Williams like Giacchino did with RO, but Powell proves you don’t have to to still make a great soundtrack in this universe, feeling at home but completely unique. I think I still prefer RPO and Incredibles to it, but this is one hell of a good listen.

It really is a pleasure to listen to and I love both the new Williams theme and what Powell did with it and with the overall score. The only reason it's not higher on my list is because I'm not a big fan of the choral Enfys Nest theme. The rest of the music is pretty damn terrific.

so after watching Incredibles, yeah Giacchino is definitely in the mix for now but only Greenwood and Stetson are safe.

So I’ve been going back and listening to some of these soundtracks (mainly as inspiration for writing), and can we just admire how amazing this track is?

I gave Infinity War a solo listen at last. My thoughts on it have significantly improved. I don’t know what I was expecting the first go (maybe hoping Silvestri would go Van Helsing on our asses), but the emotion is strong, the orchestrations are larger than life, the new Thanos theme is tremendous. We can definitely pencil Silvestri in for composer of the year. The one drawback on it? I still wish that he’d integrated more of the individual hero themes into the meat of the score. Imagine a medley when the heroes battle Thanos on Titan, jumping from Spidey’s theme to Strange’s, BT’s Iron Man to TB’s Guardians. Or Black Panther playing in counterpoint to Cap’s March. (Why is it absent when *YOU* wrote it, Alan?) I know Marvel’s musical continuity isn’t the strongest, but you could have done a lot by reintroducing these themes (and I know it’s possible, and it can be outstanding, since the Red Skull theme is present). But outside of the Avengers theme and one (obviously tacked) Panther statement, there’s nothing else there. Hopefully they can correct this in Avengers 4, because they could do wonders with this.

Last minute busy work is so much better when giving another listen to these scores, so that I can solidify my final lineups in January.
I really did undervalue just how awesome Solo sounds. And First Man as well. Some great stuff this year.
