Helen Mirren, Prime Suspect Frances McDormand, Olive Kitteridge Holly Hunter, The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom
Those are at the top of my list. Mostly looking for miniseries and TV movie recommendations for the best, must-see performances....but since I cheated with Prime Suspect feel free to include series' if you want!

If we're not counting things like Fargo or Political Animals (where Dunst, Tolman and Weaver would rank extremely high):
Gillian Anderson, Bleak House Halle Berry, Introducing Dorothy Dandridge Sônia Braga, The Burning Season Judy Davis and Tammy Blanchard, Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows Laura Linney, John Adams Helen Mirren, Elizabeth I Julianne Moore, Game Change Meryl Streep, Angels in America Mare Winningham, Hatfields & McCoys

I think for some reason people look over Mary Louise Parker in AiA - she is the opposite of Justin Kirk (who's good but not THAT good) - everybody mentions her when talking about it, but in general forgets her and I think she's really great there.
The ones in the original post by Hunter, McDormand, Mirren are major great ones though, ranking with all their very best work.
Lange/Barrymore - Grey Gardens Winslet - Mildred Pierce

Alison Steadman in Abigail's Party, which could make a good case for being my favourite female performance of all times, in any medium.

I adore Judi Dench and Eileen Atwood in Cranford.
+1 on Linney's Abigail Adams and Streep's triple role in Angels in America.

just off the top of my head, Mare Winningham in Hatfields and McCoys and Justine Waddell in Wives and Daughters. Kirsten Dunst deserves a mention for Fargo too, and Sarah Paulson for AHS: Asylum.

Oh well, since people aren't strictly sticking to movie / mini series parameters, I'm adding Susan Lynch in her "To Say I Love You" trio of Cracker episodes.

Year and a half later....
I think we can comfortably put Michelle Williams - Fosse/Verdon somewhere on the shortlist.
