Didn’t think I’d ever see a movie that was a blend of Diary of a Country Priest and Taxi Driver but here we are. Although this film isn’t primarily about faith – granted, that's obviously a facet – I've found that the best films that seriously tackle that and semi-related ideas (religion, existential dread, the works) are challenging and difficult to wrap your head around at first...the best example of this – Ordet, one of the most accomplished and easily misunderstood movies out there. And I think, to some degree, that idea of genuine difficulty applies here. It's not a totally masterful movie, but it isn't an easy one either, and I was totally captivated by the end. The last 10 minutes or so of this thing was nuts. And depressing. It certainly leaves you thinking, which, for me, is always a huge plus in a movie's favor. “…you’re always in the garden.” Great stuff. As for how I interpret the ending - his final moments of delusion, the same way I look at the ending of Taxi Driver.

Just got around to finally seeing this. Still digesting it but pretty mixed. Hawke was pretty great but looking back now I don’t see it as an egregious snub that he wasn’t nominated. Did like a lot of things about this though. Think it settles in the good, not great bucket for me.
