Says this French site who had someone in Cannes....and apparently Polanski or rather his producers were there very quietly looking to complete financing for the long gestating Alfred Dreyfus project based on Robert Harris' book An Officer and a Spy (anybody read it ?) -- More: last week Polanski was asked by a German publication if he's still doing Dreyfus and he said "Absolutely, it's an important and exciting project." So this one, said to be very similar in scale to The Pianist, is surely still in the works. Polanski talked about his trouble with the production last Oct '17: But Dujardin yes an Oscar winner isn't a "star" right? His casting might suggest a shift: perhaps they've brought the budget down so they can shoot in French after all and in which case they'd only really need name French actors? (Gotta go Romain Duris for Dreyfus!) For discussion too: has anyone seen Based on a True Story? I can't wait--it'd be interesting to see any 84 y/o filmmaker make a Stephen King riff lol. Who knows when it'll be released in the US - probably dumped on demand or netflix?

Dujardin is an ace choice for the role, but I'm not looking forward to the inevitable backlash he'll get.

This is an inevitable film really - Polanski to some, a victim of a great legal injustice, is destined to make this film that is about a landmark of legal injustice. This isn't just a dry historical epic but rather an ambitious and personal one for its filmmaker who may not make another film and whose entire career really is about the oppression of the weak by the powerful (yes, I get the irony).
I have often said that Polanski is arguably the greatest director of all-time in a lot of ways - he has at least 6 films that routinely get labeled masterpieces and across a wide range of styles (Knife in The Water, Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, Tess, The Pianist) - and really you couldn't find a project more suited for his artistic farewell than this.
I don't know if it will be good - not many directors are great into their 80s really, but it will be something to see.....

That's from Spring 2016. At the time I was thinking the actor was Depp, made sense.... A list star, worked with Polanski already, even kinda speaks French. And around that time the whole Amber Heard fiasco was happening which would've kept him from a long overseas shoot.....

I'm waiting for this since sooo many years. Loved the book. Dujardin would be a great choice for this role.

Four days ago Polanski, Dujardin, and French producer Alain Goldman (who that French site mentions) were seen arriving at the same Paris hotel. So there's some movement post-Cannes. But when will this begin shooting.......

More!
Emmanuelle Seigner is listed in the cast on IMDb (to be expected). But also: Louis Garrel is listed as playing Alfred Dreyfus. He was originally cast in Venus in Fur, replaced by Amalric..... Cast is shaping up. I was hoping for Romain Duris as Dreyfus but oh well! Polanski has said there's "about fifty important roles" - who else will he cast, how about Auteuil? Depardieu?

Seigner will probably act as Pauline Monnier, whom Picquart had an affair with. For Depardieu I could only see the role of Major Henry (though he is already a bit too old for this part, but obviously make-up can do wonders). He is in North Korea right now though and I'm not sure he wants to go back to France right now... For Auteuil there would be more roles available. As well as Amalric, who I hope will be part of the cast.

The quote below is from the Esquire piece. I had posted earlier in this thread about how important and major this film is to Polanski - it's not just another movie - that's a rather obvious yet painfully oblivious point below. I think you'll find that what fascinates him about the case is the political manifestations of it and how people were used for it at the service of broader social points. It's material entirely in his wheelhouse. I think when they suggest equating the anti-semitic aspect of the Dreyfus case to his case would be overtly banal and simplistic - its rather like saying he can't make this film but anyone else could have when, really, he is almost insanely well suited to this material personally and professionally. The persecution of Dreyfus was rooted blatant antisemitism. So for Polanski to make a film about the tale—inherently tying the historical injustice done to a falsely-accused man to the multiple charges of child molestation he himself faces—is about as despicable as it gets. It's easy to wonder how a Polanski film even gets made in 2018, but unfortunately the director maintains a surprising number of Hollywood admirers.

I know this won't come within a thousand miles of awards consideration, but I still hope to see Dujardin in a good role benefiting of his talent. He's still one of my favorite Oscar winners of the decade.

Well that was fast! Either the first official still or at least a professional on set photograph. From Jean Dujardin's instagram.

I think Roman wants to bring it to Cannes, but I hope he doesn't rush it, because that was the problem with Based on a true story.
