some of mine in alphabetical order
Amy Adams - Backseat
This is dynamite on paper, and Amy's gonna be wanting reparations for her 2016 snub.
Cate Blanchett - Where'd You Go, Bernadette
It's BLanchett playing an antisocial, anxiety-ridden suburbanite mother in a Linklater comedy. What's not to be excited about?
Timothée Chalamet - Beautiful Boy
It's Timmy Chalamet.
Timothée Chalamet - Hot Summer Nights
IT'S TIMMY CHALAMET!!!
More seriously though, I love how transformative this guy already is in such a young career, how adept he is at projecting the many different facets of youth. He was brilliant in CMBYN for sure, but it's becoming clear that he can be brilliant doing other types of young characters too, which is very exciting to see.
Toni Collette - Hereditary
No explanation needed. This is going to be a great performance in a great film. The hype is just too high.
Joel Edgerton - Boy Erased
Considered putting Hedges or Kidman here, but Hedges will probably be doing the same thing he does in all his movies and Kidman's role seems like it might be small, so I'm going with Edgerton as the head therapist of the conversion therapy program. The mental health profession is already an interesting role to explore cinematically, add on to that a hefty dose of good intentions and extreme religious delusion and you get the ingredients for a very complex character.
Elsie Fisher - Eighth Grade
Looks like it'll be a very REAL performance of an eighth grader growing up in modern America , acne at all.
Kathryn Hahn - Private Life
Has Kathryn Hahn done drama before? Will this be her first time? Either way, I'm there for it.
Jonah Hill - Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot
It's the hair.
Hugh Jackman - The Front Runner
The kind of meaty role Jackman hasn't gotten since Les Mis (no, Logan wasn't a meaty role). Has the makings of a landmark performance and an Oscar frontrunner.
Kiki Layne - If Beale Street Could Talk
First timer in a very complex role. This is going to be her breakout moment.
Matthew McConaughey - The Beach Bum
Matthew McConaughey playing a rebellious stoner named "Moondog" in a Harmony Korine film? Take my money.
Saoirse Ronan - Mary Queen of Scots
I think Ronan's going to deliver in a big way with this project. She hasn't done anything else on this scale yet and she has a lot to live up to with Vanessa Redgrave's 1971 performance, but that's just going to make her inevitable success even more delicious and confirm that she's even more versatile than we've already seen.
Lakeith Stanfield - Sorry to Bother You
Something about Lakeith Stanfield acting white for a whole movie just does it for me.
Charlize Theron - Tully
I'm ready for another complex, authentic performance from Theron. There's always something exciting about a film stripping away a facade and getting to the warts-and-all realities of human experience, and Tully seems poised to do that, and Theron seems poised to serve genuine, unflattering, mom-body realness.
