Recently, video review aggregate Channel Awesome (aka. home to the Nostalgia Critic) has been facing incredible backlash. Starting with former contributors to the site filing a list of grievances in a Google doc under the #ChangetheChannel movement, and the bad PR damage control to follow. You can check the docs out here for the full story, but for the short version... CEO Mike Michaud has a habit for being a colossal asshat, constantly breathing down the neck of contributors, and all in all just making terrible decision after decision (we can also add misogyny to that list, in light of what’s come out). That came out as early as Alison Pregler’s (Obscurus Lupa) unceremonious banishment, which led other high profile producers like Lindsay Ellis and Kyle Kallgren to follow suit and leave. Pregler made her case public knowledge following the scandal, but it never went anywhere. However, as early as March, contributors both former and current (including Linkara, who has since left) started reaching out to each other, and sharing their own stories of neglect, abuse, and total unprofessionalism. Their stories all totaled up to that aforementioned Google doc reaching 70 pages in length. Largely it concerns Michaud’s terrible choices behind the scenes, and the bullying he subjected those contributors to. Channel Awesome is a company business, but has no idea how to run like one. Contributors to the site weren’t payed employees, but paid in exposure, in which the site would embed their videos, and the site would earn money from ad revenue, and the contributors from clicks. But rather than shine the light on these lesser known contributors, the site would place all the emphasis on Doug Walker and the Nostalgia Critic, and they, along with Rob Walker, had a terrible track record with producer communication. Not to mention during anniversary crossovers, Michaud insisted that those contributors sign over their video earnings to fund those movies (when they were working for free, and had to keep a consistent content schedule). Speaking of which, the production of those anniversary crossovers - including Doug Walker’s four hour dirge To Boldly Flee - were horrendous. Walker initially laughed off Lindsay Ellis’ suggestion of having craft services on set as diva behavior, despite being told it was essential for film shoots to have them. Performers were working under stressful conditions, some were injured in stunts gone wrong (with contracts made up exempting them of responsibility, and when one woman was hurt, Rob Walker had to coerce her into signing since she was a last minute stand in), some passed out and went without water, and Doug refused to eliminate an implied rape joke despite protests. Not to mention firing their HR head who worked non-stop even through holidays a day after surgery, the failed promises of their Indiegogo campaign, and several instances of alleged sexual harassment t. With all of this in the air, Channel Awesome decided to pull some damage control posting an “apology” in response. They had a chance to prove that they could get better, that they could win back the graces of heir audiences, and the producers they hurt. But instead, they just dug their heels in throwing thinly veiled attacks, refusing to accept any responsibility for their poor handling of sensitive issues, their exact words being “we sincerely regret you feel that way.” This backfired on them tremendously, showing to those people that they have learned nothing, and will likely never change. Oh, and apparently they scaled back their proposed epic ten year anniversary special, without telling the other contributors - who were ready to fly out to Chicago - about it (great communication there). In response, another exodus occurred, leaving only ten contributors left where there was 40 in March. And apparently, it’s not easy to simply fire Michaud, since he owns the Nostalgia Critic brand, which would lose the Walkers that character. I do not care about Channel Awesome in the slightest. I use to enjoy Doug’s Shtick back in the day before his repetition bored me, and I gravitated towards the other producers who wanted to branch out, which was the only reason I kept coming back as the NC kept regressing rather than evolving. After the Obscurus Lupa fiasco, I gave up on the site altogether. Michaud’s childish tyranny was no surprise to me, but this reflects just as badly on the Walkers too. Even if he’s not mentioned much in the docs, and may not have done such awful things as Michaud and his brother, there’s no way Doug can be excused since he had to know this was going on, and he turned a blind eye to it. This just reflects poorly on him, and everyone in that circle, especially when he’s already perceived as narcissistic, egotistical, and extremely thin-skinned. It’s stuff like this that make me feel vindicated for avoiding his insufferable vanity projects ever since. UPDATE: And things have only gotten worse. On their website, they’ve posted a response directly taking aim at the site’s former contributors and their former HR head. No apology, no sincerity, no hint of regret whatsoever. It all devolved into arrogant, defensive, remorseless finger pointing and victim blaming. As a result, only three - three, where there used to be forty in March - contributors remain linked to the site.

Channel Awesome?
That's seriously the name these artists went under the umbrella with? Really?
I hope they disband and rebrand as the Super Duper Company.

Just when it seems they can’t get any pettier.
In other news, in reference to the original Google Doc, in which an anonymous Jane Doe was one of several young women being sexually groomed by a then-unnamed content creator, now a second Jane Doe has come forth. It turns out that the most likely culprit was Justin Carmical (JewWario), and this was covered up by CA higher-ups. This information now becoming public, and taking the site’s horrid and nit-picking response into account, those ten producers have now slimmed to three, with Doug Walker’s last remaining co-contributors (Larry Bundy Jr. and Brad Jones) apparently planning to depart as well. And so it is that after ten years, Channel Awesome has effectively killed itself. And even with his rabid fan base (which Rob Walker would like you to know is huge), I highly doubt Doug Walker (and Rob, and Mike cockstain Michaud for that matter) is able to walk away from this unscathed. All they had to do was be sincere for one minute, and show that they could be professional, but no, they went and proved that they are as thin-skinned and egotistical as ever. By refusing to accept responsibility, efficiently communicate, and by continuing to toss blame at everyone but themselves, they’ve tainted their image for a long time to come.

Also I think Doug will probably get out of this fine, at least if they don't bungle it further, though I wouldn't be surprised if they did. The entire situation is c-crazy.

Back in 2008 or so, I used to watch Nostalgia Critic to kill time at work. Fun times. Then his shtick got real old, very fast, and it's nothing but an unwatchable sketch show now. It's been very interesting to follow this over the last couple months. Their "we're sorry you felt that way" apology is one for the books.

I'm not sure how bad this is in the grand scheme of things for people outside the fanbase, but I'm not sure where Doug can go from here. I read that he signed over all the rights to the Critic character to Michaud.

That being said I can't see Michaud continuing the character without Doug, unless it's out of absolute spite or something.

The previous response already showed me that the company was about as ineptly run as it gets.

Hasn't their been controversy surrounding them for a while? I remember people complaining a lot about the company around the time To Boldly Flee was released. I used to really love the NC and I still watch a lot of his older videos, but his reviews are completely unbearable now. I do kinda enjoy his out-of-character ramblings, though. That being said, I haven't followed this controversy at all. Should be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Aparently the copyright dispute was one of the “big” talking points they had a problem with (over numerous other legitimate grievances) in their official response. The copyright is held by Channel Awesome as a whole, spread across four people with an expected fifth by year’s end. However, they conveniently dance around the fact that Michaud is still majority shareholder, and gets the lion’s share of executive decisions. So its pretty much the same exact thing.

Mainly surrounding the miscommunication after To Boldly Flee, there was, since it made it seem like the site was closing down, and that the other producers would be dropped. And the utter belly flop of Demo Reel didn’t help either. And even his out of character ramblings have gotten so mean-spirited. It’s like he thinks everyone expects him to inhabit this character 24/7, so he has no off-switch anymore. I think he was really good at what he did back in the day, but as I got older, and I wanted more meat to chew on in videos, I just grew so tired of it. Whereas the other producers liked to branch out and explore new routes outside of the angry wheelhouse (Such as Film Brain dropping his pitchy screams), Doug just feels like he’s continually regressing (even his bi-weekly think-pieces have been lifted from better sources). Not to say I haven’t liked any post-Demo Reel episodes of his (Les Mis is my favorite NC review, and Foodfight! was funny), but it’s really not worth keeping up with anymore.

TOTALLY disagree, I think Doug can still make some reviews that are as funny as he ever was! His "Rapsittle(sp?) Street Kids Christmas Special" episode in December was as LMAO funny as his best stuff, and the relatively recent "Kangaroo Jack" roasting had some hysterical moments as well. The allegations against CA, though, are reprehensible and pretty hard not to believe are at least more than 50% true with so many people saying the same thing. Clearly Michaud is the real villain here, and even if Doug is partially to blame he is "needs to apologize" guilty, not "deserves a lawsuit and/or is likely a bad person" guilty. The longer he stays there (or at least doesn't make a decent remorseful public statement), the worse it gets, but I think a good chunk of the angry fans (the less histrionic ones) see he's stuck between a rock & a hard place and isn't the root of the problem, so I sincerely doubt this will hurt his reputation long-term in any way. Despite your dislike of his work, he's found a niche with his "MST3K meets The Daily Show" style that a lot of people (myself included) crave & would want to see much more of. He's no comedy genius, but I think he's a smart, creative & very funny guy whose work (imho) is AT LEAST a bit funnier than most of Jimmy Fallon's stuff, and that is more than enough for a promising future in some form of comedy. PS #1: Lindsay Ellis is a cheap Nostalgia Critic ripoff, cloyingly UNFUNNY & witless, and a complete & utter stomach-churning sjw NIGHTMARE! If it was just her I would NOT buy the complaints, but most of the other accusers seem credible (though that Holly pr chick seems to be trying to deflect blame for her part in the poor management). PS #2: That JewWario story is TERRIFYING! Boy am I glad I didn't get into YT channels till after his death, cuz I saw some of his videos and I DEFINITELY would have been a fan and I can 100% see myself WEEPING if I saw that "You Are Not Stupid" video after he died. And to later find out THAT was the kind of person I grieved...ugh! If it's that gross to me as a stranger to him, can't imagine how fucking SICK his poor fans must feel now!

He has his moments, for sure, but it’s just gotten harder for me to enjoy him. The last review of his I tried to watch was Alice Through the Looking Glass. Funnily enough, when it came to what was actually wrong with the film, I fundamentally agreed with most of what he had to say (even if I thought SBC was badly executed whereas he praised him, but difference in opinion happens to everyone). My problem is that when it came to the actual execution, it just came off as overreactionary and shouty. I know that’s always been his calling card, but now it just feels repetitious, like he’s getting angry over the strangest things, and it’s starting to feel disingenuous. And I like the idea of his sketches in concept, but they rarely pay off because they bring the momentum to a screeching halt. The reason I gravitated to Foodfight! is because it recaptured that lightning in a bottle of his early days. Everything was laid out in simplicity rather than trying overreach, the sketches actually serve the review rather than detract (those bookends are hilarious), and everything about that movie that he gets angry over or snarks at feels earned (maybe I’m biased, because I believe that Foodfight! is the worst movie I’ve ever seen). I’m sure he has his hits, but it’s gotten harder to find them or seek them out when it feels like he’s been going through the motions. And I agree that nothing he’s done is on the level of Michaud (though some of his actions are at the very least questionable), but if he remains complicit and continues to turn a blind eye, it’s sending the signal (intentionally or not) that he’s endorsing these decisions, and it’s only making him look worse by letting this rabbit hole get deeper. Literally this entire backlash could be improved by a genuine apology without any sarcasm (even that shitbag Logan Paul, disingenuous as he was, understood that).

Well, late to the party here. I've heard about this controversy a while back. All I could say about this is.... that I am not too surprise. It also kinda helps that I never grew too personally attached to the Channel (or the Nostalgic Critic, especially during this decade) to begin with. I even kinda envy some that have gone on to not know who they are in the first place.
And I pretty much second this sentence about the NC.
I also generally grew sick and tired of rabid fanboys often citing, referencing, worshiping, and just taking everything at a face value from that channel and associates. Almost to an inescapable level. So I guess this news now serves as the ultimate poignant moment for those diehards who think they couldn't do no wrong...lol. However, what went down behind the scenes did sound rather poor for the contributors in all sincerity. Again, I can’t say that I’m completely surprised there. Plus the whole mess as described from your fourth paragraph did allude to similar production issues of The Room (from The Disaster Artist) for me, funny enough.

A year later, but I highly recommend watching this YouTube video summarizing the site’s history, the amateur executive decisions made behind the scenes, and the utter fallout after their non-apology.
I can proudly say I’ve abstained from any and all Walker clan videos since then.

There was so much more to this story that I had no idea about. Sickening.
