I don't know why this matters, I'm just going to rank them by order of preference: 1. Gosling 2. Hardy 3. Gyllenhaal 4. Fassbender

I rank 'em... Gosling, Fassbender, Gyllenhaal, Hardy.
Foreseeably, Gosling is closest to an Oscar this year with First Man, I think. Who are the other threats in lead this year...Bale? Carell?

I like them all and actually see inspired and deep subtext in the best performances of Hardy and Fassbender that I don't necessarily see as much in Gosling or Gyllenhaal but those guys have a consistency that's hard to match and admirable and tends to ingratiate itself to the Academy.
Like I know why people maybe wouldn't like Fassbender but couldn't understand anyone not liking Gosling.....

Based on what they've done so far... Gosling would be my choice, as despite his unworthy La La Land nomination, he is still under nominated and should have won in 2007 when he wasn't even nominated. Hardy is under nominated too. I feel he should be a two time nominee, rather than a one time nominee for a completely meh piece of work. Of the four actors, he's the one I dig the most, although I think Gosling is the superior actor at the moment. Gyllenhaal is a very similar case to Hardy. I figure he should be a two time nominee at this point, and again, his actual nomination isn't one of the two I refer to. On a non acting note, something about the guy just irks me a bit, so I don't really have that thing I have with the above two guys, whereby I would actively like to see them win. Fassbender

All fantastic actors on a very similar level. Not much between Gyllenhaal and Fassbender.

For me it's:
1. Gosling: the best and most versatile actor of his age range, he's done many genres and styles of movie and all very well. I nominate him for Drive, The Nice Guys, Blue Valentine, Lars and The Real Girl, Crazy Stupid Love and The Ides of March. 2. Fassbender: very close to Gosling. He's not as versatile, he can't do comedy, and he can bring so much depth into his dramatic roles. He was robbed a win for Jobs, and deserves nominations for Shame, Hunger, Prometheus, Fish Tank and Jane Eyre. 3. Gyllenhaal: of all of them, he gave the best performance in Nightcrawler, but has his own share of dumpsters. He can't really elevate a weak screenplay and fall into some histrionic traps if there's not a good director around. He can be found in my line-ups with Nightcrawler, Nocturnal Animals, Prisoners and Brokeback Mountain. 4. Hardy: I like him less than most people on this board, but that doesn't mean I find him to be bad. He's nom-worthy in The Revenant, Locke and Legend. Not win-worthy yet, can be quite wooden and is hugely overrated in his Christopher Nolan directed performances, but he's indeed talented.

Fassbender is way ahead of the rest of those guys, who are all just okay to me. I guess I like Hardy the best of the other three just because he's so good in the tough guy roles, but he hasn't impressed me in much else.

just going off talent, Hardy, then Fassbender, then Gyllenhaal, then Gosling.
Of all their combined nominations, Hardy is the only one that deserved to win. (I guess Fassbender too, because the 2015 best actor lineup was absolute shit)
