Inspired by this op ed "penned" by Meryl Streep Here's what came to mind for me: Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins; The Sound of Music) Julie Christie (Doctor Zhivago) Catherine Deneuve (Belle de jour; Repulsion) Faye Dunaway (Bonnie and Clyde; Chinatown) Mia Farrow (Rosemary’s Baby) Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs) Holly Hunter (The Piano) Diane Keaton (Annie Hall) Gong Li (Raise the Red Lantern) Shirley MacLaine (The Apartment) Frances McDormand (Fargo) Sissy Spacek (Carrie) Kate Winslet (Titanic) What do you think? Help me name some more?

Olivia De Havilland? Sophia Loren? de Havilland isn't really the star of Gone with the Wind. Loren is one of the all time great celebrities, for sure, but are any of her films classics in their own right?

You can also make the argument that The Adventures of Robin Hood (female co-lead) and Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (co-lead) are as well. She certainly fits the bill.

Stephen already replied about de Havilland. Loren is iconic in Two women Plus Marriage, Italian Style and Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow could be considered classics as well. She even has a minor Chaplin film to her credit, so depending on how people feel about The Countess of Hong Kong, she's got that as well.

Also, Sissy Spacek has Badlands and 3 Women in her filmography, so she should be credited for those as well (as well as Shelley D for the latter as well as The Shining). And Linda Hamilton for her two Terminator films as well. Also, I suppose Terms of Endearment is a classic, so Shirley Mac should have that listed as well.

I girasoli and Una giornata particolare >>> the countess of Hong Kong though! I don't much care for it either, but it does have its defenders and its pedigree does put it at least in the conversation.

Hello Doris day. Yeah, I'd argue that Raising Arizona is just as much of a classic as The Piano is. I have no qualms with the latter being considered one, but that's me. Tippi Hedren, Jamie Lee Curtis, Claire Bloom for Limelight, Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson, Maggie Smith, Monica Vitti . . . there's a pretty endless list, so I guess one has to ask what qualifies a "classic."
