Hopefully this gets Bardem put of that slump.

I'm sorry, the most exciting news from that article is that HOLY SHIT ANIMANIACS REBOOT IS HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!
Even if it is only on Hulu. Hell, I may subscribe to Hulu in 2020 for a brief while just to see if my babies survived the jump to the 21st century.

Viced your post could be true... Idk how reliable this site is (but some have said they're "very reliable") : thegww.com/steven-spielberg-is-expected-to-direct-amazons-cortes-miniseries-starring-javier-bardem/Let's assume this is happening. Bardem's next, films before end of this year, his first serious TV foray in a 4-hour epic, and helmed by Spielberg who I imagine if he's directing he'll do the whole thing - huge project, ambitious, very difficult to pull off. And all I'm sayin is.... there's no way (also exec producer) Bardem who's obsessed with Pacino hasn't at least thrown his name in as potential Montezuma, the old dethroned emperor.... (Adding: a role Pacino probably shouldn't do, but one that may be too attractive for him to turn down)

Mini update from Variety - What's interesting is a lot of the shows they mention have finished production or are currently filming, except this one..... maybe it will roll before end of the year??

DeadlineKirk Douglas is busier than Nicholson and DDL combined! Bardem also said recently he'll film this before doing Little Mermaid. This is a huge, huge deal - Bardem headlining a major real-life story in a blockbuster-epic level production. Zaillian hot off The Irishman, fascinating filmmakers (haven't seen their work - stephen a fan?).....

Wowza, what a crew! I wish they made it a four-hour cinema epic but I'll devour the TV series too, thank you very much!

I'm not thrill, Bardem is too leftwing for the role, and now Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal as producers, I don't know.- This should be directed by Mel Gibson or Terry Malick. Maybe one of the 3 amigos, but only Cuaron has the elegance for doing something epycal but also technicolor, like Captain from Castile or El Cid.- There isn't a Henry King or Anthonhy Mann right now, I guess.-

Indeed. I think we talked previously about how much Bardem needed a project like this that looked too good (on paper) and too big to fail. After a strong start to the last decade with Biutiful and his campy turn in Skyfall (not sure if that has aged well) , his career has seemed aimless, minor and full of critical failures and disappointments. Like a lot of actors who seemed in their prime in the 2000's, much of the following decade was not kind to him. I think Bardem is a terrific actor at his best, so I was rooting for this to be a major return to form and prominence. I'm sure he'll get other opportunities to get back to the heights of his heyday, but ones as epic as this for Spanish speaking leading men don't come around every day. A massive blow for him.

I think Raoul Silva has aged remarkably well, certainly better than Waltz's Blofeld (a case where the casting was perfect, but the material was not). But yeah, Bardem's career after that has been a bit of a letdown for me. Some solid work scattered throughout (I quite like The Counselor and him in it), but nothing on the world-class level he's capable of. This was the project I was hoping would be everything we needed to put him back on track. Not just that, but come on, it's one of the most exciting projects we've had on the horizon in ages.

Yeah, this was a brutal loss for Bardem. Hard to see where he goes from here, as his luck in projects hasn't been good for quite awhile . Dune might be good, but I doubt it'll be an acting showcase for him. His best option might be to return to his roots and team up with Almodovar again. Worked out pretty well for Antonio Banderas.

Worked out pretty well for Antonio Banderas.I expect Dune to be well-received critically (and probably underwhelm commercially), but his character would have more to do in the proposed sequel, so it remains to be seen what they'll do with Stilgar. It's not an extremely baity role, but it's a solid one. I'd love for Cuaron or Del Toro to work with Bardem, as he gave his career-best work with AGI. Hell, if Bardem can't get a conquistador project off the ground with Spielberg, bring it to Herzog.

We had no news for this for almost two years. We should have seen this coming. They were two weeks into filming before shutting down due to the pandemic. No one could have seen this coming, because it was already in production. This project is a legitimate casualty of Covid-19.
