I thought it was decent. I’ve got some buddies who have HATED this film and some who have really enjoyed it. The rather divisive response has been interesting to say the least. But overall, I enjoyed it, though I wouldn’t call it mind blowing or that memorable. The visuals and action were fun, especially The Shining sequence. Performances ranged from acceptable to good. Some characters felt kinda flat (I could sum up Daito’s personality as being Japanese) and not all of the humor landed for me. Some things felt very cliche hollywod like the forced romance, the supposedly horrible birthmark that you can barely even notice, but if there’s anything that really bothered me, it was Wade barely giving a shit about his Aunt dying. He only mentions her once after that. Maybe it was a homage to the worst part of the original Star Wars??? I also kinda wish the issues outside the Oasis could’ve been explored a bit more. Still, I had a fun time. Glad I saw it on the big screen. Never read the book, though I’m curious now. My mom (who doesn’t play video games at all) did and really enjoyed it, so that’s gotta count for something.

I'm usually not a fan of 3D and most of the time I watch the 2D version of a film if a cinema offers it. But I wonder with this film that is set in a virtual world if it is better to watch this in 3D?
Advices?

At the beginning I thought, many decades have passed, but the music is still Van Halen 's. I saw it with my teenage kids, they missed all the references to the 80s culture, and I was unable to get the videogames ones, so I really wonder which audience it was meant for. The message is "switch off the computer and media twice a week", but it delivered it quite endearingly.

One of the worst films I have ever seen, no hyperbole.

It definitely was fun. Spielberg was surely the right man to bring this to the screen. As he can combine visually stunning pictures so well with good action sequences. I like the concept of being in a virtual world (well not for myself, but at least for a character in a book or a movie) I would have just preferred some different settings there than so many futuristic, technological and dark looking worlds. Is this really where people would like to spend their time? But well, the characters are mostly forced in those we see as they are hunting their keys and if life on earth would be as bad as depicted in Columbus you could understand the desire to find another world to live in. The search has some really great scenes (the car chase - and especially the solution; the Shining reference, which is way better than Kubrick's terrible film; the John Hughes trap;), but one weak point are the characters to me, who stay pretty colourless. It's another strong entry in Spielberg's ouevre, but well outside his Top Ten for me. 7.5/10
