Waititi is becoming one of my favorite current directors. This sounds great.

This has been filming for almost a month. Also in the cast: Sam Rockwell and Rebel Wilson. Mihai Malaimare (The Master) is shooting it. Fox Searchlight has already released the first still.....
and from Indiewire:

I'm not a Waititi fan (What We Do in the Shadows was okay but predictable, Hunt for the Wilderpeople was mediocre buddy movie fluff, haven't seen Ragnarok), and this looks like more of the same from him. He doesn't take risks, he makes safe, predictable little comedies that are custom designed to fit into the quirky indie market.

I think his very light and goofy (majorly improv'd) approach to Thor Ragnarok could've backfired. Look what happened to Lord & Miller on Solo. And I mean..... a Nazi satire itself is a major risk not to mention he's playing a "sympathetic" Hitler. lol

For a no-footage poster, it's quite good.

Mmm, I'm definitely excited about it, but at least to me just going by that clip, I think some people are definitely not going to get it and hate it.

I mean, that is definitely a trailer.
I can already hear the thinkpieces being banged out: "In this day and age, is normalizing Hitler in a comedic sense the right move?" And unfortunately, in a world where satire has been all but smothered in its crib by the real world antics we're surrounded by, I don't think they're entirely without merit. It'll all come down to the tone and the approach. But I can definitely see this being far too controversial and alienating for an Academy who gave Best Picture to Green Book.

With all that said, it looks like a far better version of Moonrise Kingdom.

I'm sure I'll enjoy because I've enjoyed Waititi's other work, but I think it was definitely overestimated for the Oscar. I guess I should have known that it was unlikely that it would be an awards contender, but you never know sometimes what will break out. I doubt this will though just way too loaded for televised awards shows. I don't even know if it gets a Best Picture nomination now. Maybe because it's Fox Searchlight, and it's possible enough voters could rank it number 1, but I think it's going to be a tough sell for Fox Searchlight. I can't imagine them actually missing a year, but besides this, they have A Hidden Life, and Lucy in the Sky which don't look like big contenders either.

It looks like something quirky enough to turn people off, but I really liked what I saw. Hitler with a New Zealand accent in particular sounds really funny.

Oh, God, this is my sense of humor I'm getting major Monty Python vibes from it, I hope it's as wild as it looks. Now I need a full-length trailer.

okay, so first thing...I LOVE that trailer. Second thing, this is looking really Wes Anderson inspired (like Moonrise Kingdom meets Inglorious Basterds). Are we thinking it's a bit too left field to score big? I think a screenplay nod is in the works but could easily see this getting generally snubbed for other above the line categories in favor of safer picks (Harriet, Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Little Women) and projects from more established players (Scorsese, Tarantino). I know we have that conversation every year and sometimes we're wrong. Who can say this far out.
regardless, I am so fucking in.

Oh, God, this is my sense of humor I'm getting major Monty Python vibes from it. Totally agree. I guess I'll enjoy it very much. But I thought this would be a very strong contender for BP Oscar and now that I watched the teaser I'm not at all sure that will be the case.

Official Twitter account tweeted this meme earlier today. The promotion for this movie is surely tricky, but Searchlight seems to be having fun with it

So now I'm more confident again, but I definitely agree that the promotion is still going to be tricky.
