Columbine is one of the best books I've ever read so I've been looking for something else like it. Non-fiction is more interesting to me than the "Girl on the Train" type of crime.
I plan on checking out Helter Skelter soon too.
Any other recommendations?

In the Wake of the Butcher by James Jessen Badal. It is a masterfully written book about what I consider the most terrifying, brutal and unnerving unsolved serial murder case in American history. It is the story of the Cleveland Torso Murderer, who slaughtered over a dozen people in the 1930s and wreaked a reign of terror that ended up getting post-Capone Eliot Ness involved, and it was the one case he couldn't solve. This would make a phenomenal film on the level of Zodiac, and indeed Fincher was tapped to direct the adaptation of the graphic novel Torso that is also based on the case.
Seriously, this is (for me) the pinnacle of true-crime, and I say that as an aficionado of the genre.

My mom is a big fan of The Innocent Man by John Grisham. Considering that it was his first foray into nonfiction, it was very well done and a fascinating read. I would have liked to know his sources in footnotes (feetnote?) or something, though. Too much of the book left me wondering "how did he come to that conclusion?"

I would second I Heard You Paint Houses. It took me a little bit to get into it, but once I did it's a hell of a ride. I really hope Scorsese doesn't ruin it.
The Executioner's Song is my favourite, and In Cold Blood is also great, but though it's prettier written it feels slight in comparison with Mailer's work.

Very similar in style and structure to Columbine, it's also a masterpiece.
