Steel Magnolias (1989)
Nominated for: Best Supporting Actress - Julia Roberts
I really enjoyed this one, more than I thought I would. The practically all-female cast (the two or three male characters are basically afterthoughts) was spectacular with the exception of Daryl Hannah, who operated at two ridiculous extremes throughout the film without a meaningful arc. I'm glad her character took a backseat to the rest. 7.5/10
I nominate it for: Best Actress - Sally Field Best Supporting Actress - Shirley MacLaine (runner-up) Best Supporting Actress - Julia Roberts Best Supporting Actress - Dolly Parton Best Adapted Screenplay** Best Original Score (runner-up) Best Ensemble Cast**
7 noms / 2 wins
and Olympia Dukakis barely misses the 5th slot for supporting actress.
