The Dark at the Top of the Stairs (1960)
nominated for best supporting actress (Shirley Knight, who's wonderful)
Film as a whole is a dud. Plays extremely regressive with the whole family dynamic and supports your basic patriarchal model and advocates for wives to be available for sex even when they're not in the mood "because if they don't, some other woman will". Yeah, it's all pretty nauseating. Pretty laissez-faire about domestic violence too. Not a good look.
But the performances were fabulous. Knight was the MVP with Eve Arden and Lee Kinsolving right behind her. Also liked Angela Lansbury a lot in her small role. What a cast.
