Recently watched both Tunes of Glory and Our Man in Havana for the first time, and man this guy was good! The former was the way better movie and performance.
So what are your favorite performances, films, and general thoughts on the guy?
The Lavender Hill Mob is probably my pick for both... followed by The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Makes a very strong case for being the best actor of his generation, although that depends on where Richard Attenborough slots in.

Eventually will get to his George Smiley, those miniseries. But I'd definitely recommend his Fagin in Oliver Twist ('48). Should see it anyway, my fav Dickens adaptation. His performance (and the way his character looked) caused a whole stir, protests etc, and the film wasn't released in the US until '51. Even then they cut 7 minutes from his performance! Wasn't til the '70s they screened a complete version. Now it's on FilmStruck crisply, a click away....

Just giving a shout out to his greatly named Jamesir Bensonmum in Murder By Death - dude had a great sense of humor about himself and his career.

One of the best actors of his generation. I loved his spellbinding performance in Little Dorrit and for anyone in the U.K who hasn't seen it, it recently appeared on Netflix. It's way overlong but he's the single reason I recommend it. The Lavender Hill Mob is my favourite film of his. Still not seen The Bridge on the River Kwai.

He's an excellent actor. I can't recommend Kind Hearts and Coronets enough.

He's an excellent actor. I can't recommend Kind Hearts and Coronets enough. I read that as Kingdom Hearts and began laughing at the thought of Disney including Obi-Wan in one of the games. Actually, I'd totally go for a Death Star world. And a lightsaber Keyblade.

A Death Star World could be amazing. "Welcome to the dark side audience!"

So, I watched The Prisoner (1955) again - since Nolan may be making the OTHER Prisoner .......and the acting in this movie is just incredible....... Guinness & Jack Hawkins........one of Guinness' very best - which is really saying something.........should be much better known and is incredibly relevant in its sociopolitical / religious subject matter too wallsofjericho - You see The Prisoner (1955)? walls is a big Guinness fan iirc.....walls isn't in this thread......I notice weird stuff like that sometimes........but then again I was weird enough to watch this movie AGAIN because Chris Nolan may remake another story that is totaly unrelated with the same title..........

As an aside, Jack Hawkins was such a great character actor. I always loved seeing him crop up in things.

I still haven't seen this! But I've heard it was one of Guinness's more emotional roles (more so at the end). I sort of got hung up on his comedic masterclass in The Ladykillers that year.

My most recent Guinness was The Man in the White Suit; which was a bit of a disappointment. Don't remember a thing of it except one certain cutton scene and a drunk(on intellectual power? ha!) mini score.

he's tremendous in Tunes of Glory as the laissez-faire commanding officer locked in an explosive clash of personalities with his tight-lipped replacement played by John Mills. One of the best acting showcases of 1960. love his comic work too. Our Man in Havana and Lavender Hill Mob especially but his performance in The Ladykillers is truly next-level demented black comedy gold, complete with pasty skin and false teeth. He's playing the most obviously sinister crook in the world but Alexander Mackendrick might as well have snatched him from the set of a vampire movie. I have a few more to see of his 50s output before I wrap up the decade. Horse's Mouth at some point.
