The animation, directors, cast, plot, and Spider-Gwen all got me really intrigued for it.

I don't know much about box-office but isn't Christmas a terrible time time to release this (and Bumblebee)? I somewhat wonder the same thing there as well for a lot of other December releases, like Alita and Aquaman. But this time a Star Wars movie won't be around at least. Some international sales may also vary for the better in any other cases.

43 and climbing. As a huge Spidey fan, between this and the PS4 game, this all makes me so happy.

Indeed. Sony should probably have Phil Lord and Chris Miller to thank for it.

Should be locked for a Best Animated Feature nomination I doubt it. I see them opting for Early Man and whatever GKids has before this. oh look, another spider-man film but it's all animated and cute this time. Dont ruin this for me!

Yep this really looks great. Easily among my most anticipated this Christmas. Glad to see the reviews are great.

I just found out that Peter Ramsey (director of the deliriously beautiful Rise of the Guardians) was a director on this. I'm even more amped. And by heaven, these are glowing reviews. Mind you, everything halfway decent (and most of what isn't) gets glowing reviews nowadays, but I couldn't be more pumped for a superhero film.
And this is coming from someone that has never heard of "Miles Morales" before in his life.

I just feel bad for the poor sod who’ll break the 100% train with a negative, and incur all fanboy wrath as a result.
Review scores: The highest stakes battle in the world.

It finally happened, and people are having a field day with it. The first, and so far only negative to drop the RT score to 99 is from Roger Moore. And while it’s sad to bash a man’s opinion, it does seem an awful troll-y review who’s main issue is the animation style, when the entire point is it being centered around that style.

Almost like a reverse Emoji Movie effect when a few reviewers had to ruin a perfectly good 0%.

I finally watched this movie. Here is my INITIAL, HONEST REACTION: More to follow, but I think that sums it up. But seriously, fuck this trash.

Okay, I'll start with the good:
Noir Spidey was a cool idea.
Peter B. Parker is a pretty great character, and I would have loved to see more about him overcoming (or succumbing to) his depression or struggling with his self-image. It's unfortunate that he has to drag Miles around everywhere because *plot,* but Peter himself always held my interest.
Everything before Miles gets superpowers is good stuff. I loved getting to know his unapologetically black, inner city experience, his father's ethos, and his mother's... well, nevermind she's hardly a character, but that's okay. I loved Uncle Aaron. I would have liked to see more of what it's like to be a black kid on the streets in Brooklyn and how he feels that he can't fit into the preppy atmosphere at his new school, but this is mostly brushed over. That's fine, it's good background, I'm sure the plot will be... good....
Oh goddamnit.
The moment Spider-Man shows up, this whole thing goes to hell. The multiverse plot is meant to be all STAAAAKES but comes off as "meh, villain destroying the world, who cares."
The others spideys are all (painfully unfunny) gag characters and we never see any jolly co-operation between anyone; this is so obviously a "Miles Morales" story and the non-gag characters exist to further *his* story, which goes against the very message of the movie.
Kingpin is the most stupidly underdeveloped piece of idiot evil I think I've ever seen in a CBM.
Aunt May is unironically more annoying than Awkwafina in Crazy Rich Asians.
TOO MUCH WINKING AT THE AUDIENCE BULLSHIT. Peter Parker has always been a comedic character, and they got his quips right. The rest of this movie is "we referenced [X]!" humor or "concussions sure are funny" humor. It is CONSTANTLY reminding you that this is a "funny Spidey movie!" in the same way that Homecoming did.
And I fucking HATED Homecoming.
And I'm sorry, not everyone can be Spider-Man. I'd rather a movie be made about Miles's dad. Maybe "everyone can be a good man with flaws, who loves his family and strives to do what is right."
I'd dig the hell out of that movie.

Maybe "everyone can be a good man with flaws, who loves his family and strives to do what is right." I'd dig the hell out of that movie. That’s... what I think both Miles and Peter learn at the end of the movie. They both drifted away from their families as a result of their fears of responsibility. Peter’s as not just a superhero but a husband and Miles as a son. Jefferson and Uncle Aaron both see something in Miles they couldn’t in themselves. It’s his great power, and it’s his (and everyone’s) responsibility to fulfill that potential. Everyone can be Spider-Man in this movie because it argues that it’s not just the suit and the web slinging that makes that character who he is, more importantly it’s his determination to be better and do better, no matter the obstacles, including one’s own insecurities. A hero to the people. Hell, Kingpin comes face to face with the fact that it was his prioritizing of defeating Spider-Man over the care of his own family that ultimately led to their deaths. The whole villain’s plot is driven by a need to make amends with broken promises. I mean, that’s just my sappy take on it.

The whole villain’s plot is driven by a need to make amends with broken promises. I mean, that’s just my sappy take on it. Eh, I can see where you're coming from. But we don't get enough background on Peter for his return to MJ to matter. And I don't really see too much of that in the family of Miles either: Dad loves his son but doesn't know how to care for him, and there's good material there that is ignored. Uncle Aaron sees that Miles is a good kid, but his heroic sacrifice works against any real emotional resonance: it's so sudden, realizing that Spidey is Miles and then getting killed. No deep thought into how his criminal lifestyle has affected his only connection in life, just insta-death for FEELS. And the repeated mantra to keep getting up feels like just simple "you're the hero-protagonist, you have to do this" crap. We only see how Aaron's death affects his brother insomuch as how it affects his brother's relationship with Miles (which is dreadfully little, tbh; just that short scene at his son's dorm). We never see how Peter's abandonment of MJ has affected her, only how it has made him depressed.
And Kingpin... oh lord. That whole bit with his family was just too heavy handed and I hated it, but its heart was in the right place... if he had any development at all outside of "I miss my family!" But he doesn't. Nobody does. Damnit, even Aunt May isn't allowed to grieve, she's just spunky hero lady AND I HATE HER SOOOOOO MUCH. It's surface level. It puts this stuff out there, and obviously it can be seen in the text. But there is no burrowing into Peter's mind to get into why he's depressed or why he left his marriage. There's no burrowing into Miles to understand why he feels that he must escape into the Spidey persona at the cost of his family. *sigh* I feel doomed to loathe every franchise piece that gets released. Maybe I've just lost my inner child.
