I also thought of Laughton for Lecter. Maybe K. Hepburn for Clarice?

Laughton is too easy to cast as the "scary man." I'd prefer somebody that doesn't fit the stereotype but could theoretically be bone chilling if he played it quietly and with dignity. I don't know my classic cinema well enough to know who to fit in there, though.

What about George Sanders as Lector?

What about George Sanders as Lector? That's a really interesting choice. I've only seen him in his lighter foppish roles (which includes All About Eve). Did he ever do something really heavy?

George Sanders would be terrific as well.

Quetee's choice of George Sanders is brilliant. I cosign that.
For Clarice, that's tougher to cast because I'm not a big fan of a lot of those actresses from that period. I guess Barbara Stanwyck. I've seen her in many thrillers, and she can pull off the balance of strength and vulnerability that's crucial to the character.

George Sanders is a brilliant choice. As for Clarice, Teresa Wright.

I guess if I had to go with someone, I would go with Greer Garson.

Really, I can't see any of the actresses from that age doing justice to a young, Southern Clarice, but if I had to pick, I would go with Stanwyck. I've seen her play many different types of women well, at least.

Hmm, can't really see Barbara as Clarice. I guess if I had to go with someone, I would go with Greer Garson. Nake her swedish and go with Bergman. Bergman's inescapable Europeanness made me overlook her, but if she was someone who could pass as an American Southerner, I would be all for her.
