Apparently this is a choose your own adventure style movie. Has anyone seen this? Do i need to watch Black Mirror before?

The interactive gimmick was mildly fun and engaging, but it definitely felt like Brooker got too caught up in said gimmick and forgot to craft a story with real substance and the sophistication that we've come to expect from Black Mirror. I liked Whitehead's twitchy, unnerving performance, but there wasn't much depth to any of the characters, and while the idea of the allusion of free will is intriguing, it felt pretty underdeveloped. Definitely some fun moments, and again the gimmick was entertaining on a surface level, but overall this was a misfire. 5.5/10
Would rank it in the bottom few episodes of the show.

Hated it............you ever go to like some McDonald's where now they have kiosks that you can put your order in to save time? Well you know, the food doesn't cost you $2 less even though they got to f'n fire some human being who used to take your order.
So what you get is a lesser human experience, for the privilege of eating your sh*tty burger 1 minute faster and you know, sometimes that person who takes your order may make you laugh or smile or you can do that to them which feels nice - that's the beauty of human connection.
That's what this BS experience was - a far lesser human experience, a poor screenplay that has to serve the poor gimmick and maddeningly often - and not only don't you even get the burger, you don't get any soul in the story either.
It's also too clever for it's own good, picks the sh*ttiest 1984 music (except for XTC) and is instantly forgettable.
Want fries with that?

I actually really liked it. The whole "gimmick" (I fucking hate this word) fits the plot like a glove, it is used not only as a tool to shock the viewers but as a plot element and to build an atmosphere, and I thought that was very clever. I hate the use of the word "gimmick" 'cause I think it's a very dumb way to dismiss any different way of storytelling as just some extra detail when it's a vital part of the narrative. It's like when people say Birdman is just "a long shot" or that Boyhood was "just shot during a gazillion years", when it is EXACTLY part of the point the movies are trying to make.
Ok, enough with the venting, now let's get back to Bandersnatch. That was a very, very interesting way to tell a story - even if it's a "thin" plot, it's enriched by the way it's told. The dark humor landed and the twists were like ones straight out of a pulp fiction novel, which really worked and matched what the episode was going for. In many moments, it reminded me of Fight Club in a positive way. Also, Whitehead gave a quite good performance.

Apparently I just hit one of the 'hard endings' and that there are about 6-7 hours of footage and timelines that I haven't even unearthed yet. Ugh

I haven't seen it or any Black Mirror (I'm going to give in and subscribe one of these days, but not before I scream at the heavens quite a bit more), but I want to second this part of the comment so much. There's this one McDonald's in particular that my mom and I always go to when coming home from the theater in D.C. Once we get off the Metro we're still an hour from home, and we've made a habit of going to this place because (a.) it's the only food open near midnight, and (b.) the night shift is packed with the most wonderful people that we love hanging out with. I generally hate fast food because it dehumanizes the experience so much (and the food is crap of course), but sometimes all you need to do is rehumanize it.

Without giving too much away, I always thought choosing a cereal was one of the easiest decisions I'll ever have to make. Bandersnatch obliterated that.

Late as fuck to the party. Just finished The National Anthem. Holy fuck, that's a hell of a way to start a series. Amazing, amazing stuff. I shouldn't say it's all downhill from here, but damn, nothing beats this episode.

Very bizarre yet interesting. There's fun in choosing the character actions. Started of in a fun 'choose your own adventure' mode but by the end it goes into meta territory and then comes a bonkers scene which was funny. Kind of underwhelmed by the end but i guess i would've ended up with a very different one if my choices were different but the story is not as addictive as one would like to go back and check other possibilities. Fionn Whitehead did a pretty good job.
Still a very creative attempt by Netflix. Would like to see more of these.

National Anthem is quite easily one of my least favorites I kinda thought that was the majority. If anyone has interest in starting Black mirrot, I never tell them this episode even though it's the first one

Y'all are doing it wrong. You don't start new viewers with "National Anthem" (a brilliant episode). What you do is show 'em "San Junipero" so they go, "Oh, this seems like a lovely series about love and technology." Then you follow it up with "Shut Up and Dance."

I LOVE this idea, but personally I'd flip them around. "Shut Up and Dance" pretty much defines the soul-crushing formula of the show. Most episodes end with Brooker pouring battery acid on your brain, and none moreso than this episode. It's a pretty fair introduction to the overall tone of the series. Then you follow it up with "San Junipero" and the surprise of the happy ending is that much more emotionally effective since you've just previously been exposed to the show at its darkest.

Obviously latest season of Black Mirror was a little disappointing (for me though, not quite as disappointing as some reviews make it out to be). I'm already anxious for the next season to come out as I feel like there are still lots of concepts for the show to explore. I'd love for them to look at extreme or contorted versions some of these technologies:
- Ridesharing Apps- I thought Smithereens would focus a little more on taking a creepy look at this)
- UberEats- the idea of having access to pretty much anything at any time, not to mention the kinds of errands someone could send a "DoorDasher" on
- THC Vape Pens- What are the consequences of being able to get high anywhere at any time without even feeling it in your lungs?
- Momo- Shut Up and Drive sort of examined the Blue Whale Challenge, now take it to the next level and imagine if something as horrifying as Momo was really happening
- Police Body Cams- Having your every move watched from your own POV, and all of the things police must want to hide
- Technology in the Classroom- Data-driven, tech-based teaching pushed to the extreme in the face of high-stakes testing
- Movie CGI- Imagine every last aspect of filmmaking stripped away and replaced with something digital?
- Interactive Entertainment- Of course, they need to follow up with what they've created in Bandersnatch because there's so much more to do with it
How would you like to see Charlie build a story around these technologies? What else should they look at?

Canceling lol both actually getting cancelled and "cancel" culture on internet Jesus at first I thought you meant they just canceled Black Mirror and I was so sad. But yes, also a great theme. A TV producer gets ghosted by an online date, and their blossoming show gets canceled prematurely, they have to do something drastic to stand out and be welcomed and valued in a competitive society ready to drop you-- I'd watch it

The problem with the show is that real life is clearly outpacing their ideas so when they get around to it, they are already a beat or two off. Smithereens was way outdated and the shows writing now has to fall into traps to tell the audience what they already know but make sure we all "feel" the same way about it (a huge, huge mistake).
The best episodes are actually nothing like that - Shut Up and Dance literally can have you siding for and against the central character but to do that, you have to go into some pretty dark territory. How the FNCK could what happened in US political elections in the last 3 YEARS, the debate of technology being used politically across the US conservative/liberal political parties etc. the emergence of bots etc. not even get addressed in Season 5 (?!?!?) - that's an update from a whole other side to The Waldo Moment and that isn't even on their radar - it's like the show about technology is being made by my apolitical grandfather now and worse he can't remember what he already covered in the show to build on it.
This is a show that on some level has to be about politics (at least somewhat) and that is now afraid to get into politics, that is about criticizing your audience that is also afraid of offending its audience now.
