Mel Gibson is mulling joining the DC Extended Universe … as a director. Warner Bros. is courting the actor-director to helm Suicide Squad 2 and the sides are early in talks, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. No official offer has been made nor has any commitment. Sources say that Gibson is familiarizing himself with the material. But the studio is not being passive and it is also looking at other directors, Daniel Espinosa among them. David Ayer directed the initial outing, which featured an all-star cast that included Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto. The movie faced some hurdles during production and was met with somewhat polarizing response, but grossed $745 million worldwide, enough to put a sequel on the fast-track. Ayer is now developing Gotham City Sirens, a project that reunites him with Robbie and focuses on the female villains of the DC Universe. Squad told the story of villains such as Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc who are forced into the service of the government in exchange for lighter sentences. The fact that Gibson, riding high thanks to his Oscar-nominated war movie Hacksaw Ridge, is being courted by Warners marks a remarkable turnaround for the actor-director. His image took a hit in the 2000s after a drunk driving arrest and anti-Semitic comments, and he found himself losing studio work. Gibson did nab a cameo in The Hangover: Part II — a movie made by Warners — but a backlash within the studio and parts of the cast ended with him being unceremoniously dropped. www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/warner-bros-courts-mel-gibson-suicide-squad-sequel-974436Stephen rises

Copying and pasting my original rant.
It'd take a genuine Christmas miracle to salvage this. This entire series has based itself around artistic freedom, and opposing the studio mandate agenda of companies like Marvel, when in actuality they've been just as bad in that field. In fact, they've arguably been worse about it, and seem to have no idea how to make those basic moves they desperately want to recreate. They screw up and make so much misguided course corrections, showing they have no clue how to steer the ship, and I'm sick of getting burned over and over.
I'm still sticking it out until Wonder Woman, because I really want it to prove me and everyone else wrong and take the world by storm, but it'll be with serious reservations.
Looking at all of their future films (especially compared to the Marvel slate that makes them look even emptier), it doesn't inspire much confidence (at least until The Batman, potentially). Given Snyder's track record, Justice League ain't gonna set the series straight. Aquaman has James Wan, but Aquaman hasn't proven himself. And what about Shazam, Cyborg, or Green Lantern? Do any of them sound interesting? What can we expect of The Flash when it simply refuses to come to life?
it just feels like if WB/DC wants to send a message or inspire any confidence, Wonder Woman is not only the best option, but the only option. Plus, it would give them a huge victory over Marvel, the fact that they've created a good, female-driven superhero film before their rivals would be such a boost. They're practically being handed a surefire success on a silver platter, so if they manage to colossally screw up what should be an *easy* fucking win, that would not just be a bad movie, but an outright embarrassment. It would be an obvious sign not only of their imcompetence with these properties, but the fact that these things are never going to get better.
So if it tanks as badly as their last films, I am out. I am never watching another one of these movies again.

Hardly. I don't want Gibson bogged down in the DCU quagmire. Hell, considering his derision at superheroes all throughout this Oscar season ("Real heroes don't wear spandex!"), I can't imagine he'll end up doing this. It's notable that he's being courted, but his close pal Robert Downey, Jr. tried to get him to do Iron Man 4 to no avail (although Marvel likely had a lot to do with that never coming to pass).

It's interesting if he really is going as far as to "familiarize himself with the material", but still, I just can't imagine this ever happening. Like, ever.

Honestly, Suicide Squad was such a piece of poop that they could get Mike Leigh to direct the sequel and I still wouldn't be interested enough to watch.

I don't think this has a realistic chance of happening.

I'll accept this shit on two conditions only:
1) It's R-rated and full of Gibson's trademark brutality 2) He gets to direct three passion projects right after it

Considering his recent comments about CBM, this would be hella hypocritical of him to direct this. At this point, I guess I shouldn't be surprised though.

I can actually see why he would wanna do this. If he pulls it off and makes an all around popular movie, he would suddenly be one of the most sought after directors again. His comeback would be complete.

I just want him to make that viking film please. I would be happy if he atleast released directors cut of Braveheart which would add something more like half of hour of material.

Mel Gibson has said that the theatrical cut is his director's cut. Everything that was excised was rightfully so. There is an extended version of the film that sometimes appears on TV with a few added scenes in, but the theatrical cut is the director's cut.
