Did BAFTA change your mind? No. Affleck was always my leader.

Agreed. He won the BAFTA, Globe, and Critics Choice. He won 32/36 critics circle awards. His film has a great shot at winning original screenplay. Washington only won the SAG, and wasn't even nominated at the BAFTAs.

I don't any backlash is gonna hurt Affleck at this point.

I have heard zero media reports showing us that Affleck's past sexual harassment charges (never been proven btw) have cause Oscar voters to vote for somebody else.

After seeing Fences, I have become even more confident Washington is winning. It seems straight up AMPAS' alley.

I'm sure he's committed a terrible crime, I don't think it's gonna cost him his Oscar though.

Affleck
Denzel was better here than his previous two Oscar wins but he still he didn't deserve a nomination.

Generally "less is more" performances like Affleck's don't beat the "more is more" that Denzel does. He's full-on Denzelling for so much of the film and it's a real sight to behold.

Not only is he terrific, but he gives the sort of loud, baity performance the Academy eat up. Add to that the fact that he directed it himself, it's been a passion project of his for some time and the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, and I think we got ourselves a winner.

All of these reasons plus SAG have me leaning this way... but I have to echo what Red has said elsewhere and there seems to be a lack of fanfare for it being his third win. Kind of surprised, is all.

Lest we forget he also won the Tony for the role, and I do think we've been seeing a trend of Tony winners like Eddie Redmayne and Mark Rylance being able to overcome people's perceptions that they don't have enough "substance" or whatever to have won. As for the lack of fanfare for his third win — I don't remember that with DDL, either (and that was his third lead win). It almost seemed incidental in both cases. In Meryl's case, it had been actual decades. But I don't think anyone would mind Denzel joining the club of three-time acting winners, does anyone really dispute that he's proven himself worthy enough? In all three cases they seem like institutions in and of themselves.

I've said Denzel from the beginning, and I'll stick to it (though if Ali wins BSA, I think Affleck could take Lead. I called Arkin winning in 2006 because I didn't think they'd give 3/4 black actors the win, so let's see if anything's changed).
