As I saw on facebook- when the president makes a statement about white supremacy, you shouldn't have to wonder whose side he's on.

"How can I do my best to condemn this hateful act and look PC, but not sacrifice or offend the non-PC votes I'll need second term?"
But seriously, this is just glorious for a man who practically built his entire campaign, his entire battle-cry out of spewing, encouraging, and fanning the flames of negativity, to suddenly try to act solemn and dignified in the face of what he brewed, and the confidence he gave to those people. He doesn't get to do this after slamming the multi-racial cast of a broadway musical with more force than the KKK.

"How can I do my best to condemn this hateful act and look PC, but not sacrifice or offend the non-PC votes I'll need second term?" Things have gotta be pretty messed up for outrage at something like this to be considered "PC". Running people down in your car isn't a "microaggression".

I'd recommend for people to not read the comments on YouTube. They're pretty fucking disgusting. Can't even count the number of comments that said the people that got ran over 'deserved it'.

It's pretty obvious which side has all the blame here...

White supremacist are idiots. But I don't get why some cities want to remove the statues of general Lee. Wasn't he appreciated even by the opposite side of the civil war? I mean, Italy is a republic now, but we didn't remove the statues of our kings. Not even of roman emperors.

The idea is that Lee fought for an evil cause, and thus all monuments to the man should be torn down, and anything complimentary towards him needs to be removed from all public consciousness. He fought for an evil cause; ergo, he was an evil man. I don't buy that for a second. People are complex. Putting people who fought honorably for their nation into a box of "evil man" is just as wrong as justifying evils committed in the name of a good cause. As for the white supremacists... I'm really wishing that Death Note was a real thing right now, and that I had one.

Martin StettIt looks like they want to give white supremacists a good reason to protest (the removal of the statue of an appreciated general, who was even an hero of the war against Mexico, if I don't remember badly), and have an excuse for a counter protest. Frankly, both parts are despicable.

Frankly, both parts are despicable. That's just cheap moral equivalency. Only one side was running people down in cars yesterday. Only one side was demonstrating in favor of racism. The Lee statue really wasn't the point of the protests yesterday. The Swastikas and fascist eagles all through the crowd had nothing to do with the Civil War. It was just a general excuse for racist demonstrations.

Frankly, both parts are despicable. This is the dumbest thing you've ever said. If the only thing you could possibly think of when white supremacists stage a rally and kill someone is that the counterprotesters just wanted something to protest, then you're either mentally deficient or just plain white trash.

Yes, the evil shits were using Lee's statue as their excuse, I should have clarified that. And that's why I'm not really upset with the statues being taken down. On a personal level, I believe that it is wrong that Lee is being dishonored by the left. But he is also being dishonored by these evil men, and if they appropriate him as a symbol, then... then the symbol is no longer what it is, but what it represents. So tear it down.

Let's drop the pretense - they just wanted to unite in their hatred. The sight of all those racist white men with torches - it looked like a lynching scene out of 1900, frankly. And they carry tiki torches? There's something funny about that part of it actually. It's all sadly not surprising, but I am annoyed that this asshole President still wants to appease his hate-mongering white supremacist fans, so he strategically failed to denounce Nazism/white supremacists specifically in his statement - something I saw many Republican politicians doing. This country lost so many lives to stop the Nazis in World War II and he refuses to even directly mention them in his statement. But had it been a Muslim who drove his car into a crowd, he would have attacked Islam or called it a terrorist act. Had it been a Black Lives Matter protestor, he would have found some way to blame the entire Black Lives Matter movement. Had it been a Mexican or any non-white foreigner, he would have put out some statement about immigrants.

countjohnI wasn't obviously referring to the general attitude of white supremacists. I was focusing on the issue that lead to protest - the removal of a statue - that gave them an excuse to protest. My very first statement in this thread was "white supremacists are idiots". But I don't think that denying the value of a man by destroying his statue is a good example of the tolerance and equality you pretend to represent.

"How can I do my best to condemn this hateful act and look PC, but not sacrifice or offend the non-PC votes I'll need second term?" Whatever looks good for his PR at the moment... There’s a reason why he didn't react away to this matter. Even other republicans like Cruz and Rubio have called Trump out for downplaying this.

I don't care one way or the other about Confederate monuments, to be honest. Compared to all that happened yesterday and all the other problems right now it just isn't an important issue.

Trump's only unyielding supporters at this point are people like David Duke—white supremacists who still believe that this country is rightfully theirs and nobody else's. From a political standpoint, it's almost functional—you may as well not alienate what little support you have left. There's really nothing Trump can do to win over his critics at this point—other than change, which he is fundamentally incapable of. He probably wakes up every day and decides to wing it.

atn @tepebenjamin your thoughts on the president you defend? I've always thought he was an idiot. This is far from the worst thing he's done, but yeah, I won't go out of my way to defend him. As for the whole situation, it's fucked up. It's kinda infuriating how divided the US is rn. I hate racism from both sides of the spectrum. This shit needs to end.

is absolutely disgusting. Many sides? linkYou do know about Antifa, right? Never mind those idiots. I'm talking about the intent behind the President's statement. If you can't see that there is a strategic reason why it's like pulling teeth getting that man to condemn white supremacists, then you've missed my point. Just compare his response to what it would have been had a Black Lives Matter member ran his car into a crowd of people, or an immigrant, or a Muslim, and then you see what I'm getting at.
