Vincent D'Onofrio as Robert Goren in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, in particular the first 4 seasons which were beautifully written and played. My favorite regular network TV performance ever, I think it's genius level stuff and too sophisticated for the audience who wanted something far more direct and less conceptual than what he gave them actually.

It always delights me when I remember that this is your favorite network TV performance. It actually reminds me a great deal of what Andre Braugher did on Homicide (a show that D'Onofrio gave one of the greatest one-shot guest performances in history, might I add), although Vince did it on a show that didn't always live up to his standards. Criminal Intent had the potential to be a truly great show on par with Homicide, but it was often too formulaic for its own good. But the performances were all strong.

@ stephen - I'm a huge Homicide fan but there is one episode that I loved that I've forgotten that maybe you can help me with. It involves the Braugher character bothered by a case where a guy killed his wife and kids and he can't figure out how he would do that to his kids..........eventually he says to the guy that he's figured it out, he suffocated the children so they wouldn't suffer or he wouldn't hear them.......... but he stabbed the wife to punish her (something like that), and the person in the cell replies with "Is that what I did?" and then fade out, no closure for Pemberton.
Does this ring any bells? I almost think I'm mixing up an episode of something else with Homicide (Hill Street Blues?)...........driving me crazy.
On a different note, agree entirely on Homicide and it had a lot of great guest spots - Wiliams, Buscemi, D'Onofrio........

I actually just watched that episode (I go on jags every so often of binging a handful of episodes of this and classic L&O). It's "Control" from Season 5. Guy was a colonel in the military.

Thanks stephen Seems it's on Youtube, I'm going to give it a re-watch and get that monkey off my back....... I hope it lived up. The acting on that series truly was something special. Not a single person in the cast was bad, even when the show ended up going into some weird places. I'd personally rank Braugher, Kotto, Diamond and Johnson as the cream of the crop, with Belzer, Leo and Polito right behind.

Dancy's very good but I'm not sure he even cracks my top 10 performances of Hannibal to be honest. Maybe I'm just overlooking him as much as the Emmy's did.
