I don't think he'll retire at all. Maybe he really wants to but eventually he'll direct again. Maybe 5 years after his so called "retirement", he'll come up with a "fantastic script he terribly needed to make into a movie" and he'll have his "legendary comeback" etc.
His selfishness and ego are so big that he could even fake his retirement in order to come back with a bang.

Anyone planning on seeing the movie at QT's theater? It is sold out the rest of July and it is the only movie playing all August.

This new batch of reviews are really putting the spotlight on praising DiCaprio... might have to tinker with my Best Actor predictions...

Nothing about the recent reviews changes what I predicted that that film is too light to be the knockout at the Oscars (or at least a knockout with me - nothing suggests this film has a wallop like I needed - see earlier posts)......but DiCaprio is entering some landmark areas now that we take for granted.
If he gets nodded (he is), that'll be his 6th. He's not even 45. Think about that - that's just 1 behind De Niro and Duvall - that's one more than Hanks. Oscar nods likely are going to be easier to get for him for a bit with the changes in the industry - ie there's a smaller reasonable amount of Oscar pics at least in the last few years and the next few and he has his pick of them. Not sure when the Academy will cool on him but he's the only real threat to actually challenge Nicholson imo.
........and here's the best part.......he's gotten better as an actor, which basically applies to Paul Newman and not many others. Reading his reviews is genuinely exciting - Pitt may win BSA and DiCaprio won't win in BA but Pitt will win for just being dreamy and cool it seems to me - big deal, good for him, that's fine......but the DiCaprio characterization sounds far more my kind of thing and I'm excited to see it.

That's incredible praise for a 44-year-old, and reaffirms DiCaprio's general standing as the best actor of his generation, but let's not get carried away. Pitt is still getting better notices than DiCaprio, overall.

Pitt could win. For being cool and funny and (kind of) overdue. But Di Caprio... Well, he;s a different story. Didn't quite like this guy up until GONY. I used to think "yeah, he's fine, girls like him, that's about it". Since then, he always keps making a liar out of me. The best of his era.

I think both get in. A lot of reactions are saying Pitt could win if he goes supporting.

I honestly didn’t know that the Rick Dalton character has a stutter but as someone with a stutter, his portrayal is pretty good, particularly the facial contortions, which to my great relief are fairly subtle.
Unfortunately now that I know the character has a stutter, I may have to wait until dvd to see this one. If I’m seeing it in theaters and people start laughing when he stutters (whether the film was going for laughs or not), that would probably ruin the entire experience for me.

As you are now very close to the premiere of OUATIH (you lucky bastards), I once again have to please ask you to use spoiler tags every single time you are about to reveal even the slightest critical detail/plot twist of the movie.
Some of us are going to see this in a month or so.
Thank you very much for your understanding.

The stuttering wasn’t used for any comedic effect. No one in my theatre laughed once at it. It becomes really subtle honestly. So I think you’re okay.

What's the run time of the pic - did anything get expanded from Cannes or is it the same pic btw?

Getting back on topic (I hope...): I try to read every post and also avoid spoilers. So, for those who've seen it: Are Madsen and Marsden in the final theatrical cut?

Madsen is, but I don't remember Marsden at all. Marsden was supposed to play a young Burt Reynolds, but his role was apparently cut out, possibly due to Burt death's last year (not confirmed, however).

You see the back of her head for a split second, pretty much. They were amazing together in YDKJ, couldn't give them one little scene QT?

I've heard great reactions from people in the industry so this seems like it will play up to Oscar voters. I remember hearing about packed screenings for Vice and that over-performed with 8 Oscar nods despite middling reviews (61 on Metacritic).
