The idea of this poll is to take the BP winner of each year and reimagine them with the best director nominees of that year, and ask which director would make the best version of that film. If the BP winner was nominated in directing, that option will not be listed.
So our choices for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King are...
Sofia Coppola Clint Eastwood Fernando Mereilles Peter Weir
Previous winners: 2022: Ruben Östlund's Everything Everywhere All at Once 2021: Ryusuke Hamaguchi's CODA 2020: Lee Isaac Chung's Nomadland 2019: Martin Scorsese's Parasite 2018: Spike Lee's Green Book 2017: Jordan Peele's The Shape of Water 2016: Kenneth Lonergan's Moonlight 2015: Lenny Abrahamson's Spotlight 2014: Wes Anderson's Birdman 2013: Martin Scorsese's 12 Years a Slave 2012: Steven Spielberg's Argo 2011: Woody Allen's The Artist 2010: Joel & Ethan Coen's The King's Speech 2009: James Cameron's The Hurt Locker 2008: David Fincher's Slumdog Millionaire 2007: Paul Thomas Anderson's No Country for Old Men 2006: Paul Greengrass's The Departed 2005: Bennett Miller's Crash 2004: Martin Scorsese's Million Dollar Baby

Peter Weir's version could actually trump Jackson's if he was truly as devoted to crafting Middle Earth, as he has the right sensibilities for it.
Eastwood's version would be a disaster that would be wonderful to see, particularly him as Gandalf, squinting and looking confused as a he faces down the Balrog.
Meireilles is so inconsistent that either it could be something or a disaster. But one thing I know, is it would be very bright.
Coppola's version would never leave Rivendell as it would take much time to accentuate every random aesthetic idea possible there, but the plot would never get started.

I picked Meirelles. Weir's would be great too. I don't see Eastwood or Coppola working well with this.

You know you want to see Sofia Coppola's LOTR.
Don't see what would be wrong with Eastwood's though, would be more workmanlike and have a gritter medieval feel probably. And he would have ruled as Gandalf.

You know you want to see Sofia Coppola's LOTR. I know the thread is closed, but how about this- Either gender swap or do a Peter Pan androgynous thing for Frodo with one of her usual girls (Dunst, Fanning, Scarlett, Maybe Spaeny) Jesse Plemons as Sam Bill Murray as Gandalf Jason Schwartzman as Gollum Josh Hartnett as Aragorn Kidman as Galadriel You all know you'd watch this
