FYC: Jeff Daniels in Gettysburg (supporting actor). One of his finest performances. also Gettsyburg for: supporting actor - Richard Jordan (or almost anyone else on that magnificent cast -- Martin Sheen, Sam Elliott, Kevin Conway, take your pick) adapted screenpalyoriginal score ensemble castand best picture, because it's one of the best films about the American Civil War ever made

I'll also add an FYC for the enduringly sweet Searching for Bobby Fischer directed by Steven Zaillian. A different kind of sports movie and a kinder POV on competition, contrasting Fisher's ruthlessness with Waitzkin's organic love for the game. The recurring motif of Bobby Fischer and his disappearance adds a nice touch of docudrama too that you can see echoes of in Moneyball's blend of narration w/ archival footage decades later (could you imagine a more legendary duo than Sorkin and Zaillian). Really love when movies are successfully able to integrate archival footage into a fictional narrative to reinforce an idea, and this one was a great example of that. FYC: best picture best adapted screenplay best cinematography best editing

Actresses in top-form comedic performances: Diane Keaton in Manhattan Murder Mystery, Veronica Forque in Kika, Joan Cusack in Addam Family Values and Valerie Lemercier in Les Visiteurs.
An early great performance by Javier Bardem in Golden Balls.
Ferrara's Body Snatchers has a lot to offers in plenty of categories (although not sure if it's elegible this year)
For this year, I'm actually taking notes.

Haven't really seen much from this year beyond the popular crap & Oscar nominated, so going to need to lean more on recs from here to help round out my ballot. Keeping a loose watchlist below from the mentions so far that I haven't seen: Same. I've only seen 25 movies from this year (against 36 of 1994), and I only liked about half of them, so I'll have to do my homework too. I'm excited, though. This seems like a very rich year for cinema. My watchlist currently includes: The Age of Innocence (Martin Scorsese) Blue (Derek Jarman) Farewell, My Concubine (Chen Kaige) The Fugitive (Andrew Davis) In the Name of the Father (Jim Sheridan) Naked (Mike Leigh) Short Cuts (Robert Altman) Three Colours: Blue (Kieslowski) The Wedding Banquet (Ang Lee) Woman Sesame Oil Maker (Fei Xie) My main FYC for this year (not yet mentioned, and strangely overlooked by the Academy): Groundhog Day
Best Picture Best Director Best Actor in a Leading Role (Bill Murray) Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Andie McDowell) Best Original Screenplay And of course, Schindler's List and The Piano for every possible category, including (and especially) Best Score.

Ferrara's Body Snatchers has a lot to offers in plenty of categories (although not sure if it's elegible this year) After a brief look at IMDb, it is indeed eligible - 1993 release in France marks its place

Hmm, according to what I'm reading, that is indeed true. Unless somebody has other information, I'm going with ineligible. Here's the IMDb information: The question is whether the premiere counts or not

I believe this had a 1992 country of origin release. Would be interested to get a clarification/confirmation from others on this. Hmm, according to what I'm reading, that is indeed true. Unless somebody has other information, I'm going with ineligible. Here's the IMDb information: The question is whether the premiere counts or not I say leave it in 1993. I can't find anything about this random 1992 Hong Kong premiere (only about Jan 1, 1993), for all we know it might've been some screening for the authorities. Or someone put a wrong date on IMDb. Everybody and their mother considers this a 1993 film, c'mon now!
