Okay....when it comes to casting Desdemona...lemme Quarterback this thing An option so perfect, too good to be true, that they'll probably never even think of it. Kelly Reilly.Had fantastic chemistry with Denzel in Flight. Has since gone on to become a pretty iconic TV star in the America thanks to the huge success of Yellowstone. Here's the kicker....Reilly has already played Desdemona to award worthy effect. She was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2008 for a West End staging of Othello, that starred Chiwitel Ejiofor, Tom Hiddleston and Ewan McGregor.
She knows the role and has already nailed it. And she's already worked with D. If I was producing this thing and found out that Kelly had already played Desdemona to a high level, she'd be the one I'd try to get.
That’s a great choice. The chemistry is already there. She was also offered the part of Desdemona in Flight. Although it was a different interpretation of the play. LOL!

I hope maybe Kelly saw the play was happening and made contact with Kenny Leon, Denzel and the producers to put herself in contention for the part. Because they probably wouldn't think of her otherwise, especially if they don't know she's already done the play. Could be an easy Tony nod/win for her. I think her Yellowstone obligations will be over by the time they have to start rehearsing the play, as it's in it's final season.

Gyllenhaal can't stop talking about Othello. Seems excited and anxious about going toe to toe with the GOAT. Says he doesn't know if there are any two better people to learn from than William Shakespeare and Denzel Washington.Denzel best to keep an eye out for Jake. Make sure he's not trying to disarm him with compliments, before stealing the show . I'm only half joking, because historically Iago is generally seen as the more interesting role in the play. Gyllenhaal knows he has a golden opportunity here. And Jake is obviously taking this extremely seriously, if he's prepping a whole year in advance ( doesn't look like he'll film anything before the play, though I may be wrong). He's gonna come prepared.

This could be a major coup for Gyllenhaal if he pulls it off. Iago is the better role, probably the most intrinsically fascinating role in all of Shakespearean canon, and rarely do we see a production where Iago doesn't steal the show because the role is more or less designed to. I do think we've seen in prior Gyllenhaal performances that he is capable of the slimy deceptive nature of the role (Nightcrawler especially, which still rates as an all-timer performance) and with Jake having been on the back foot the last several years in not being able to get a proper foundation, this could turn things around for him.

The "problem" with Iago is he doesn't "end" or arc particlarly memorably.......so it almost always defaults back to Othello in how you remember the play. Iago is very much "the glitter" not "the glue" role............. but Othello is usually what resonates - even if Iago steals the plaudits I'm not the biggest Gyllenaal fan - he's fine but not more than that imo.......... however if he's looking for a performance to use as a starting point it is Bob Hoskins - who gave maybe THE best film performance of ANY Shakespearean role - not played by Olivier - and that's really saying something I know - in the Anthony Hopkins (in blackface) Othello (1981)

Preparing like it’s a Heavyweight championship fight..lol. Expect him to release acting training montages set to Gonna Fly Now as the premiere approaches.

Going to the Shakespeare gym Strong words ( and likes) for Denzel's Macbeth. Be interesting to see if his Othello will be recieved as strongly.

I agree this could be massive for Gyllenhaal if he pulls it off. I actually think it will put him in pole position to start swiping many of the film roles with major auteurs that that the likes of DiCaprio/Bale/Phoenix are maybe ageing out of, but Mescal/Chalamet/Butler aren't quite mature enough for yet. I can see a great performance in this putting Gyllenhaal on the radar for someone like Paul Thomas Anderson. Gyllenhaal already has a major reputation as an actor, but as you said, this couis really light the fires under people as a reminder that he's a generational talent (who hasn't been maximising his talent in recent years).

You think PTA will come to a performance next year? Other film directors? I definitely think Joel Coen and Frances McDormand will come since they’ve worked with Denzel now and were at the A Raisin in the Sun premiere back in 2014. As well as the regulars (Spike, Fuqua, etc.)

As well as the regulars (Spike, Fuqua, etc.) It'll probably be the hottest ticket on Broadway next season, so I expect anyone in the film industry with any interest in theatre or Shakespeare, especially if they live in New York, will likely attend at some point. Daniel Day-Lewis and his director wife Rebecca Miller live in New York and probably catch Broadway shows all the time, so them as an example ( though not neccesarily at the premiere. I can see DDL just sneaking in for an afternoon matinee and making sure no one knows he's even in the building ). I think plenty of directors will come to see the show next year, if only to say they saw it at Hollywood social events. But also to scout possible new talent in the cast. Especially after Austin Butler broke through with The Iceman Cometh. PTA could maybe be among them. You never know. Can't see Frances & Joel not coming to support Denzel after Macbeth.
