One thing I was just thinking about and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't recall Bella ever really lusting after someone. As in finding someone attractive. Her sexual awakening never ties with desire for a person, but only desire for the pleasure she receives from the physical act. I just find that interesting.

People probably getting tired of me harping on this movie, but I don't really find that "interesting" and really I'd say it's why Bella is such a shallow and uninteresting character. All she wants to do is fuck (or receive oral or finger herself I guess) and once in a while they'll show a shot of her reading a book. I joked in another thread that it's a movie about a horny zombie and that about sums it up.

I think it’s interesting in the sense that it’s a character trait possibly tied to the (unrevealed) gender of the baby whose brain she now possesses. In general, people so often link the female sexual experience with romantic attraction, but here you might say that Bella engages in sex like a certain kind of man would – in a purely carnal and hedonistic way. Obviously that’s not to say women never approach sex this way, but the possibility that her baby’s brain is actually a male brain makes you think about her character in a different light. And the fact that her sexual awakening is unbound from romantic attraction I think ultimately serves the film’s feminist goals.

Well men fall in love all the time and are certainly attracted to particular people and not other people which didn't seem to be a distinction Bella made. This isn't just about you, and we're drifting into territory that might be too controversial for our regular movie boards, but it's amazing how gender essentialism ("male brain") has made a comeback over the past fiveish years as a result of the rhetoric around certain issues. Every man is certainly not a detached horndog on the level of Bella, and even if that were the case there's no evidence that it would be the result of having a "male brain" rather than being socialized to be sexually entitled.

And the fact that her sexual awakening is unbound from romantic attraction I think ultimately serves the film’s feminist goals. I didn't even think about it in terms of gender tbh. I thought about it purely from a psychosexual developmental perspective. Her environments are so insular from the start that she doesn't get the opportunity to develop or be socialized into any concrete ideas for what makes a person attractive. She is betrothed to Max out of default and then goes with Duncan not because of him but because of his promise of freedom. Duncan then is a sexual partner by default, but she doesn't express any attraction to him, just of the "furious jumping" he's introduced her to. Once Duncan then starts undermining her autonomy, she becomes more and more detached before ultimately rejecting him. Later on, her relational dynamics become more based on a kind of emotional intimacy. Max respects and cares for Bella, and while we never get much of her relationship with Toinette (one of the issues I have with the movie's 3rd act), she does have her there with her in the end and the sex scene between the two is the most tender.

Well yes, obviously that is true, which is why I specified “a certain kind of man” in my post... And I’d say the nature vs. nurture issue is a moot one here considering the movie is a science-fiction comedy that isn’t beholden to real-life gender theory........ so I think her having a male brain is still a valid possibility as a hidden joke in the fantastical/satirical context of the film.

saw this a couple weeks ago and just wanna leave my 2 cents. I liked this, occasionally very much. But it also dragged in the middle and the final-act exposition dump was a bit awkward and padded out the conclusion, and I'm not particularly drawn to see it again. Love the sets, costumes and VFX with the worldbuilding & intense colors, but Robbie Ryan's damn fisheye lens continues to be a thorn in my side. Didn't notice anything noteworthy about the editing either, which is new for me with a Lanthimos film because his last two were sumptuously edited and full of cuts that felt intentional and helped create the atmosphere (who can forget that slow-mo duck race). In Poor Things the narrative felt more like a succession of events just strung together, although that might be more a result of it being kind of a road movie where the character goes from point A to B and learns/grows along the way. I never liked road movies.
as far as Emma Stone... she's very good. I have no complaints. But apart from her physical acting in the first 20-30 minutes I didn't find her performance anything revelatory. In the last half especially it just morphs into the kind of acting we've already seen from her and I kept waiting for a wow moment that just never comes. It ended up in a more reserved & straightward approach than I was expecting for a film so intentionally bizarre. Like I was genuinely surprised by what she was doing in The Curse but I didn't experience that with Poor Things. In a timeline where truly awful performances have and continue to win Oscars, there isn't much to complain about lol, but it should've been Huller (the best in that bunch) and if not her, Gladstone. No hate to people that loved her in this, but I don't think Stone needed Oscar #2 for this one.
Suffice to say I'm ready for Yorgos to drop McNamara and Robbie Ryan and reconnect with with Efthimis Filippou and Thimios Bakatakis (who curiously doesn't seem to have shot anything since 2021). At least with Kinds of Kindness I'm getting one of those things. I also hope he continues to work with Ramy Youssef whose sincerity was a ray of sunshine in this very weird world.
(all this makes it seem like I didn't like it -- I did! I just expected to like it a lot more based on the feedback, marketing, and my enduring love for Lanthimosian deadpan weirdness. I'd give it a solid 8 but it's more respect than love I'm sorry to say)

Ruffalo was...bad here. And I know he is like 35% of the time, but the Academy needs to stop launching Best S. Actor noms at this guy like they're T-shirts out of a canon.
Art direction, costuming, and cinematography were all unimpeachable, and Stone was joyously uninhibited in the lead (not sure if it was an Oscar-worthy turn, though), but the story itself never went as deep as it could have.

I have no idea what people see in him in this film. His English accent is in particular flat out horrific. Like if you need an example of an American actor doing an embarrassing English accent this would be it. The thing that is not matured is her psychology, but physically if she messes around with her pussy then it will have its natural physical response. And idk if you've seen kids, but their curiosity at a young age often does extend to their genitals. Sure, but I'm pretty sure that most kids' curiosity at a young age is not only about their genitals. Actually their curiosity about their genitals may represent like 1% of their curiosity. But for Bella Baxter her curiosity is like 66% about her genitals - for shock values more than anything else.

I mean, a kid's curiosity is centered largely around whatever they like or makes them feel good. Candy, Pokémon, superheroes, video games, whatever. Bella has an adult body so her curiosity with her genitals grants her greater feelings than it would in a kid's body. Plus, have we gotten so skittish around sex that having a character want to do it all the time now qualifies as shock value?

Kids are super curious about their genitals but they generally move on because they don’t understand the sexual aspect of them. The second they go through puberty and learn to orgasm, it pretty much consumes them.

It is shock value when she randomly starts masturbating incessantly, allows some random stranger to show up and grab her by the genitals, to be taken to Portugal for a sex escapade, then to be prostituted to earn money (and we needed to see her fucking like 6 random guys as a prostitute ... for what purpose?). The issue is none of these events happened organically, unlike say Breaking the Waves. They were all there to show how "out there" and "daring" this movie is.

Oh MsMovieStar, is it true that before Stone was cast as Bella, you were in the running and wanted the role so bad that you decided to go “method” and recreate the Paris segment of the film all on your own? At least…that’s what all the dailies are reporting…

The prostitution stuff, I could agree, the rest of it is not shock value, it's comedy. The never misses fish out of water comedy the likes of which we all know and love from Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Thor, Big, Mork and Mindy, Boris Karloff throwing the little girl in the lake (I can't be the only one who is sure that was meant to be funny, right?), etc. This is just a sex comedy. She has no inhibitions, is not embarrassed by anything, et voila.

The issue is none of these events happened organically, unlike say Breaking the Waves. They were all there to show how "out there" and "daring" this movie is. Breaking the Waves should be the standad, I know. But Bella Baxter has a completely different scenario and I just can't escape the thought of not thinking of Bella as a woman because we never know the gender of the baby, but in any case if she focuses so much on masturbation it's because that's the first thing she has a control of and has its rewards, the "perfect enviroment" (in God's words) the men in her life created was to their benefits even though it's not directly addressed. And if she takes the invitation to the sex escapade is a way to gain autonomy, it's dealt through primitive human actions but that's what she knows so far. And I'd say the 6 random guys is kind of making one of the main points of the movie (to me the better realised): to highlight different levels of masculine stupidity, in comedic ways, as ibbi said - which truly starts with God and her fiance - and her trying to navigate those situations while gaining some control over it, it might be through something as basic as sex but then it leads to her sexuality and deciding her future. I do think it's not as well put together (in an organic way), even though we know she's growing at fast pace she becomes an intelectual and cares for poor people in way too abrupt ways. And the whole no pregnancy, no STDs is too much of an ideal scenario but it's a fantasy world after all.

At least…that’s what all the dailies are reporting… Oh honey, Last Cha-cha-cha in Paris (2025), which you could say started off as a showreel is now in development thanks to financing from the Dairy Farmers of America Inc. and will feature not just uses for butter but for a whole array of dairy products; creme fraiche, yogurt, ice cream, custard, Ricotta, etc. Lensing will start as soon as Mark Ruffalo has confirmed that he isn't lactose intolerant. That's all I can say for the moment. I don't want to jinx it and I'd hate for the deal to go sour.

Just finished watching this movie. Super late to the party, I know. The first hour was brilliant, the second hour felt repetitious and the ending left me uneasy. I do agree that the sex scenes were uncomfortable and got way way too repetitious. My pros are the performances from Stone and Ruffalo. Excellent. Definitely holds the production together. The production design and costumes were great -- better than Barbie? You bet. I definitely see why they won Oscars. I also really liked the editing and cinematography choices. My cons are the length, felt excessive at times, and praises animal torture.
I am going to give it a 7/10. Thumbs up. Good movie.
