Similar to my Emilia Clarke thread. Jones gets some hate for her performance as Betty, which I don't think is fair. I think she's clearly not a great actress in general, but she was pretty much perfect as Betty, and truly shone in those final few episodes. Her scene with Hamm in the series finale was devastating, and Jones knocked it out of the park in my opinion.

Honestly, I think she was the MVP of the final season. Unlike Emilia Clarke, who is miscast as a conquering, charismatic empress on the rise, January Jones was perfectly cast as the icy '60s-era housewife. The problem is, the role didn't exactly require her to express much in the way of range. But I still think she was good in the part and legitimately great in the final years.

There were some seriously bad times, but I think by the end she definitely had more positive years than negative ones, so the good wins out.

This is an unpopular performance? She was perfectly cast for the role, and I thought she nailed just about every scene throughout the entire seven season run. I guess she could dwarf in the presence of all-time great work from Hamm, Moss, & co., but I wouldn't go so far as to call her a weak link. Not even close, actually. She was an essential part of keeping that unit moving as smoothly as it did.

Aside from being blonde and hot (Jones edges out Clarke slightly there), I totally disagree with the Clarke comparison for acting. Jones nailed Betty and made her well-rounded for her 60s housewife archetype. Betty was the MVP for me the first three seasons...in season 4, they lost focus of her, and in season 5, I felt like Don and Megan's narrative overpowered Betty (and Betty got a little shrill lol), and then again in 7B she hit it out of the park. The last few episodes with her still make me teary-eyed. Betty was a character who could have easily fallen off the radar after season 1, but I *wanted* more Betty and was never disappointed.
Clarke has just been on a downward trajectory since season 1. She can't hit the strong notes of her performance and she delivers ALL her big speeches with the same 'listen to me, I'm a badass' tone. Every time I want more Daeny, I'm sorely disappointed. Sucks because her narrative could easily have been the most consistently best one.

To be clear, I wasn't saying Jones and Clarke were comparable in the quality of their performances. I was making the connection as they are seen by many as the weak links of their respective casts. I'll defend Clarke for the most part, but I do think Jones gave the better performance. I really think Betty was a role made for her.
