Three of our seven best picture nominees were snubbed in our ten director field

Like most of this lineup, quite surprised by Keitel, who I definitely like but wouldn't have guessed he'd get nominated for Smoke given it is rather subdued performance and largely a facilitator of the supporting cast. He's easily the second best of that lineup.

My general thoughts: WHISPER OF THE HEART!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE IN THE TIME OF TWILIGHT!!!!!!!!!!! GHOST IN THE SHELL!!!!!!!!!!!! (Sure, it deserved tons of other nods too, but this is something) BABE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really like this year - there are hardly any films I dislike from '95 - but I didn't expect some of my lesser known favorites do so well (some of them were ranked quite high on their nominations)

Biggest takeaways for me:
Heat underperformed hard in comparison to what I expected (I thought it would get two acting nods and Adapted Screenplay nominations). I also expected Pesci or Stone to get nominated for Casino.
Surprised Ron Howard missed Director.
Brad Pitt missing for Se7en is interesting -- I always feel like he is unfairly judged because of the "What's in the BOOOOX?!" memes and people call it bad, but it's a really strong performance overall.

Favorite nominations: Streep, Keitel, Leaving Las Vegas x4, Jumanji, and Tina.
Least favorite nominations: too much Dead Man Walking, Sense & Sensibility and Apollo 13. I would have been ok with the first getting Actor+Actress, the second in some techs+Winslet, and the third also in some techs, but that's it.
Biggest snubs (among those who I know had a shot): Clueless and Smoke in Ensemble and Screenplay.

Most of these are good and blah blah blah but seriously, FUCK all y'all for snubbing Jennifer Jason Leigh for Georgia.

Best Film EditingApollo 13 Braveheart Casino Heat Se7en I'm only commenting on categories I voted for, which were only "The Big 8" + Ensemble/Editing. Here, the last 3 are excellent choices, but the first 2 should have been replaced by NIXON and THE USUAL SUSPECTS. NIXON in particular missing out on editing is laughably outrageous!

C'mon Elmius, it's pretty much a perfect lineup! Apollo 13 and Braveheart are thoroughly deserving of their placements - the former for the tension it creates and for the flawless switching back and forth between the ship's crew and the NASA people, the latter for its great battle sequences and a sense of lyricism in its rhythm. Nixon would've been a great nominee but the ones we've got are awesome in their own right!

Best Ensemble CastBraveheart Heat Sense and Sensibility To Die For The Usual Suspects Sigh! Very weak lineup. Other than HEAT and USUAL SUSPECTS, I can think of at the very least 5 or 6 ensembles vastly superior to the other 3. The early over-performance of mediocre S&S is also very disheartening.

APOLLO 13 is wonderfully edited, but I'm not a big fan of the film as a whole, so don't appreciate & don't agree with it getting in over GREAT films like NIXON and USUAL SUSPECTS. BRAVEHEART is a very good film, not BP worthy but a superb achievement nonetheless, but I don't think the editing is all that special and disagree with you about the "sense of lyricism in its rhythm."

Best Adapted ScreenplayApollo 13 - William Broyles Jr., Al Reinert - Based on the book Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13 by Jim Lovell & Jeffrey Kluger Babe - George Miller, Chris Noonan - Based on the novel The Sheep-Pig by Dick King-Smith Casino - Nicholas Pileggi, Martin Scorsese - Based on the book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi Dead Man Walking - Tim Robbins - Based on the book by Helen Prejean Ghost in the Shell - Kazunori Itō - Based on the manga by Masamune Shirow Leaving Las Vegas - Mike Figgis - Based on the novel by John O'Brien Sense and Sensibility - Emma Thompson - Based on the novel by Jane Austen Very happy about CASINO, LLV, DMW, and BABE making the line-up (yay!) very underwhelmed by APOLLO 13 and SAS making it (ugh!). But the biggest question is WHERE THE FUCK IS "GET SHORTY"?!? It got snubbed more than any other great film of '95 except CRUMB (Zero noms? Shameful!), but this is one category where it shouldn't have just been a LOCK for the nom, but a front-runner to win. IMO, Scott Frank should have TWO Oscars, respectively, for his 2 Elmore Leonard adaptations.

I just love the randomness of some of the nominations. Underground gets nothing but Picture and Director (in my world should win both...), Whispers of the Heart and out of nowhere a movie come sout of the twilight and finally learn about its existence.
La cérémonie getting NOTHING is bad taste
The four acting lineups are all strong (Keitel's nom is so lovely), I didn't vote myself for either lead actor in Heat because the year's too strong. Anyways, Freeman for the win !
And apparently I need to watch like a dozen movies in order to vote...

I think the low number of people voting made for some very eccentric picks. We had a couple films that got into categories on nothing but #1 ballots, (in one case it was two ballots, in the other case three), which placed them quite high in the final rankings. I can think of a few other nods that had similar trajectories of no mentions hardly anywhere and then BOOM a few people place them #1 or #2 and they're sky high.

What does Strange Days need to be considered one of the best movies not just of 1995 but of the whole decade?
