Okay of all of the films I've seen from the 10 BP nominees (haven't seen Past Lives or Maestro), this was the least interesting. What a disappointment. Okay ready for Oscar night. Just popped in here for an immediate reaction. Nicely didn't leave yourself enough time to watch Maestro. Smart as always, PQC. Oh, Maestro will have to wait another day. Even if I had the time, I can't do it after dragging through this. I'm in the minority, I know, but I really couldn't stand this movie.

Nicely didn't leave yourself enough time to watch Maestro. Smart as always, PQC. I meant to watch Nyad before tonight, but didn't leave enough time. Oh well. Oh that's another film that will make you nearly barf with the cliches if you're as easily bugged as I am by that stuff. But at least that one had a smiling Jodie Foster sipping diet coke. That's what saved me. Oh and I also expected more from Da'Vine Joy Randolph. Now, she didn't do anything wrong with her performance. I'm just surprised at how cemented her win has become this season. But then her category is pretty weak, so I'm not mad at it.

Ehhhhh.... I'm gonna have to ride with PromQueenCarrie and Tommen here.
Like.... it's fine. But it's pretty humdrum. Yeah I get it... some people just liked the Sessa character, but I thought he was just a dumb kid and I couldn't care less about his mental problems and his lack of adaptability. Just fucking die if you're so miserable was what I thought. The Giamatti character was more interesting, but still not nearly as interesting as his character in Sideways.
Ultimately, I think it's just your personality and the way your brain is hardwired. But for me, I'm way more hardwired to prefer Sideways, while it feels like a lot of people are more wired to feel for The Holdovers. Sideways has the element of sex which this lacks. Then the duo of Madsen + Oh, and which guy will fuck what girl.... was so funny to me. It's like Challengers, except there's an extra girl there for the +1 dude. And then.... Sideways was clearly funnier overall, the antics were hilarious. And the whole Giamatti is a loser wondering if his life will ever amount to anything is more profound than anything here. And then that California wine country backdrop is just perfect (California represent), nearly allegorical and just gave off me thinking,,,,, damn Payne really nailed that setting.
The Holdovers just felt like you kinda had to be like that dumb kid to know what if feels like, and I never was close to being like that kid. And..... Giamatti's character I can kinda see the thought behind him. He obviously has douchebag tendencies but he's an extremely caring guy. But still... all that to me just tells me that The Holdovers erred on the side of softiness and relied a bag of warm feels and the human kindness and caring aspect, but that shit just never vibes with me. I'm just not some big softie.
Bottom line.... sex. extremist comedy. antics. backdrop. the whole middle aged crisis thing, wanderings about the current status of your life.......... all those aspects rule my mind way more than some dumb kid and his unpleasant professor.
Giamatti deserved to win, tho. I'll give this movie that. American Splendor. Sideways. The Holdovers.

This movie is wonderful. Top to bottom. I love these type of journey adventures. Each of the three main characters learned about themselves and grew as human beings, while being centered in reality. I absolutely love it. The ending was more uplifting than sad. Who else choked up multiple times? For me, it was the Mary in the kitchen at the party and the exchange at the end between Paul and Angus. There is a wonderful message in here: Everybody has problems, regardless of our age, race, or social status. In life, we have to get along with people we appear to dislike.

There is a wonderful message in here: Everybody has problems, regardless of our age, race, or social status. True, though I’d say it’s more precisely about how we never know what others may be going through (loneliness, loss/grief), making the most of dealing with life’s disappointments, and not letting history dictate your future (also learning how to find happiness by looking to the future).
