This was one of those four-way ties until late. (The other one was best film editing.)

Wow, I am surprised by both to a degree, though both were obviously popular in the nominations. Thought director would be split, but honestly thought Banshees had picture in the bag.

love that cinenatography tie, and I like both films won something else as well.
The director win is quite random in retrospect, I guess Fabelmans was close in other categories.

It's pretty random, actually. 3 votes behind in BP (along with several other movies), 4 votes behind in best supporting actor (along with several others), 9 votes behind in supporting actress (although it still takes second place) 9 votes behind in ensemble (second place), 4 votes behind in editing (last place).

Much better winners than the actual Oscars.
That director win is terrible though.

Um... what a wonderful surprise? I mean, I love most of these wins anyway (hard no for Animated Film though, and it's certainly not an upset considering how much this board has jerked off to it ) but those Director and Picture wins back-to-back? Director absolutely made my day (thank you life, thank you love!) but to see Banshees lose BP is definitely a huge shock... but I love the winner even more

oh man, I was on such a high from editing all the way through lead actress and then we had to go and ruin it with BD and BP
