And they won't understand it...until they've seen it.
Box Office Tracking will only take you so far..
I don't know if we could be trusted, with such a blockbuster weekend...but we have no choice

Nice numbers for openers. Have to say more impressed with Oppenheimer because harder to sell. Nolan deserves director Oscar just for that alone.

awesome to see two genre of movies that don’t do *as well* anymore lighting up the box office
studios will probably try and recreate this strategy in the future but it won’t happen like this. like capturing lightning in a bottle.

Obviously great for Oppenheimer, but I am curious what kind of drop it will have next weekend... I suspect it’s probably going to be more frontloaded than it would have been without the Barbenheimer frenzy.

With how much of an event these two were, as movies themselves and as a meme, it’s no wonder it took off. Feels like everybody was saving up and hiding their time to see them.

I know everyone knows it already but it really needs to be stressed again and again just how fucking incredible Nolan's drawing power is. It's basically unthinkable that a 1) 3-hour 2) R-rated 3) historical "talking in rooms" drama 4) on a subject as unsexy as the development of the atomic bomb 5) headlined by that renowned box office draw Cillian Murphy (the only face that was put on the posters) could become a hit in the current BO climate... and yet it's posed to exceed even the most optimistic expectations. Sure, part of that is the Barbenheimer phenomenon but that wouldn't be possible without Nolan's name being part of the equation. He's the household name of the time. I don't know if it's even possible for him to stumble at this point. Even Spielberg had 1941 during his best streak. One could name Tenet as a similar example but what that movie did at the height of Covid was nothing short of miraculous.
Nowadays Nolan's just unparalleled in that regard. And I specifically omit Cameron because his output is far too sparse to compare them. I'm talking directors with more regular release patterns. Damn.

Barbie is a huge IP, like every girl in the western world has had one for the past 50 years. Saw lots of older women headed into the theater decked out in pink today who probably grew up with them in the 60's or 70's. So I wouldn't call this any kind of sleeper hit or attribute it to Robbie.

The fact that Oppenheimer is opening higher than Inception is beyond wild.

So this is Nolan's biggest non Batman opening right? And for probably his least commercial film.
Interesting to see if Cillian Murphy gets a boost from this after ages on the B list. All the news articles have he and Robbie's face side by side as the two stars.

What a great shot in the arm this Barbenheimer weekend gave Hollywood. It’s awesome these two movies crossed into the pop culture zeitgeist like this together and on the same OW. Its kind of poetic in a way that Cillian Murphy, one of Nolan’s “loyal soldiers” from his actor repertory who has done everything from cameos to sizeable supporting parts in several of his films is finally a lead for one of his films and it turns out to be his biggest non-Batman opening of his career. For a 3-hour talky drama about scientists and the atomic bomb. Unbelievable. Also, want to congratulate therealcomicman for keeping this thread alive during the pandemic and even after when the weekends were nothing to write home about with his consistent updates every weekend. Happy you have a great box-office weekend to celebrate my friend!
