It's nice to see that Schnabel's back to directing movies, Dafoe sounds like a good choice for VVG.

Willem Dafoe sounds like a very fine choice for Vincent van Gogh. The movie project as a whole doesn't sound to intriguing for me from what Schnabel says, but of course a biopic about this man can be interesting.

If it's half as good as Schnabel's portrait of Basquiat (1996) I am very keen.

Not the best distributor for awards race but hopefully critics will push Willem the God again.

There's already been plenty of great Van Gogh films - Vincent & Theo the greatest of them all imo (on any artist) and Pialat's Van Gogh is wonderful in a different way...but this one directed by an artist and a fine filmmaker makes you hopeful that it won't cover stuff in ways you know.
Excited to see this.....

I had no idea his Majesty Mads was in this. Now I'm even more excited. Oscar for Mads! Oscar for Willem!

Dafoe looks terrific, and some of the camerawork is gorgeous. Still, it's got a long way to go to eclipse either Lust for Life or even the Tony Curran Doctor Who episode.

I don't actually put Lust For Life in the top tier of Van Gogh flicks - that would be Pialat's Van Gogh and Altman's Vincent & Theo which I consider the greatest film ever made about any type of artist (not just a painter) in general. By the way, are we getting to the point now where Willem Dafoe has to start being considered most talented of his generation (maybe not) or at least be in the discussion because he rarely is? He's approximately the same age as Washington and Hanks et al and while not a star per se which is why I qualified it as as "most gifted" his body of work has really added up in deceptive way too. Played Van Gogh...........played Pasolini..........played Max Schreck..........played Jesus.............worked with Scorsese, Stone, Lee, Schnabel, Wes Anderson, Von Trier, etc. quite a diverse body of work.

I didn't much care for Pialat's film, and while Altman's is provoking at times, it kinda let me down as well. Still, the role itself lends itself to some really great work (Curran is my definitive Van Gogh performance, and it's also Douglas's finest hour as well). I am very keen to see what Dafoe can do. The trouble with Dafoe is that he's held back by his very offbeat appearance, which makes him somewhat tough to cast as anything other than a skeevy creep or a villain. Yes, he played Jesus and a Christ-like figure in Vietnam to great effect, but hardly anyone really thinks of him for those sorts of roles, and that's why Stone and Scorsese should be commended for their bold choices. He's got range and versatility when he's able to actually nab the parts, but he usually finds himself playing second banana to more conventional leading men.

Looks pretty great ... though the line "Maybe God made me a painter for people who haven't been born yet" is way too on the nose (unless this is something that Van Gogh himself correctly predicted in reality?). Really hope Dafoe gets his due awards success.

Dafoe looks good, not much else does. Benoît Delhomme's cinematography is doing its best Lubezki imitation which is whatever.
