She started professionally acting in 1950 (in TV, I believe she also did theatre) and had retired by 1956. In this time she worked 3 times with Hitchcock, starred opposite various big star leading men (Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Bing Crosby, Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant) and won an Oscar.
I can't really think of many other actresses that managed to do so well in such a short space of time. It's a shame she gave up acting when she became a Princess, but still her legacy is impressive.

Oh honey, it's not surprising she was always so busy and worked real hard at it: she slept with everyone.
Wasn't it Prince Aly Khan who said that it was like throwing a hot dog down a hallway?
Or was it Oleg Cassini... or Clark Gable... or Marlon Brando... or Frank Sinatra or was it a Salami or maybe a Pepperoni down a hallway...

I wish Hitchcock would've resurrected her from retirement for The Birds. Tippi was good, but Kelly would've been way better. He tried to, of course, she still didn't want to come back.

I'm not sure about The Birds but I know he wanted her for Marnie but her husband didn't want her to return to acting.

It's well documented that she was very ambitious. At 18 she was already sleeping with her drama teacher.

Well, I think being a princess had a lot to do with her getting "icon status". Also being very beautiful and being in a couple super iconic movies.

I too sort of like that she was able to make such an impact on the culture with a short run without dying young. Of course it wasn't just her movies, her classic beauty and the fact that she became an actual princess contributed to her being such an icon as well.
But most importantly, she was a lady in the streets and a freak in the sheets. All hail her!
