Haynes describes the script as "original and audacious" . He believes it's the first time that "Phoenix plays a gay man" and he's "very excited about the project".

It should be noted that PTA, Phoenix and Hoffman all described The Master as a "love story between two men" (even though it never materializes in a physical relationship), so I wouldn't say this is completely uncharted territory for Joaquin.

Phoenix is doing everything.
New Pawlikowski film with his wife. New Aster film. New Haynes film.

Set in the 1930s, Todd Haynes says it is "definitely going to be NC-17."

Wouldn't be surprised if Cory Michael Smith was the other lead.

Martin Sensmeier might be good casting opposite Phoenix. He's Native American a solid actor.

Not really enough being talked about how daring a move this is from a Best Actor winner / best of generation (or one of them) actor
Has any Best Actor winner - after he won played gay and I mean physically involved much less in an NC-17 pic?
Pretty bold movie tbh.......

Joaquin selecting a decent script for a change would be bold.

so bold to play gay in 2023 after an enormously successful decades-spanning career, multiple Oscar nods and an Oscar win Dirk Bogarde playing gay in 1961, that was bold. and it being NC-17 probably just means we see dick like three times, and probably not Phoenix's. Guarantee it won't be anything people who've been watching HBO for the last 25 years haven't seen before. It ain't gonna be Nymphomaniac.

I think it just means you can't name an actor who's done this who also meets the criteria of Phoenix's stature playing this part in such a film either - I mean it hasn't been done, right? - not really getting credit for how risky his post Oscar projects are - whether they're good or not is a different thing ........but following his Oscar win with this, Beau is Afraid and Kitbag is pretty out there ..............to me..........

And there's no downside to Phoenix playing gay at this point in his career. It's not 2005 anymore. If the movie's halfway decent he'll probably be nominated for it.

Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal just got done doing that and people barely batted an eyelid. All it does is win you more fans on Twitter for being LGBTQ friendly and in the right project maybe get you awards consideration. But playing gay in of itself isn't a bold acting move in this day and age for most actors. Coming out as gay in Hollywood...now that's bold.

Picking bad scripts and mumbling. Our "greatest" actor. What a circus.
