A music-based counterpoint to this sweet child of mine. So be a doll and share interesting commentaries on any type of music that speaks to you at the moment here. Like this one that just popped up into my YT feed ... Pacinoyes probably gonna blast them again, and Imma let him finish - but "The End" is one of the greatest closers of ALL TIME!

Well........I'm not a fan of The End (see below) - but I will say that has one of his greatest lines in it "no safety or surprise - The End" I'll list some "rules" for Rock in this thread at some point because what fun is music without "rules" (that's a joke) but as a course syllabus - and these aren't exclusive but just in general: * Sgt. Pepper was great - but more bad Rock came from it than good - remember that * 3 minutes or less even is the ideal length for songs * No solos of any kind * Avoid politics (how MAR!) * Avoid keyboards when possible - anything keyboards can do a guitar can do better * Sing about girls instead of your "deep thoughts" because you ain't that deep or else you would have thought about something else to do besides being in a band * Save "experimentation" for your eating habits......new stuff gets old.......fresh stuff gets stale....... * Keep it simple, stupid * Sexism, aggression, bad manners can be problems in life.......not so much in Rock and Roll.....if you're offending someone, you're doing something right

My own "rules":
* Don't pander to people with short attention spans - make your songs as long as you want. Honestly, if you have good musical material, it should take longer than 3 minutes to really develop it. Less than that is like only offering the tip of a slice of cheesecake.
* The more solos the better
* Any instrument is welcome if integrated well. Sometimes more is more...
* Embrace experimentation
* If you always keep it simple, you're probably boring

Good video essay that is a response to an Every Frame A Painting video about why music in the MCU films is unmemorable, using that as a springboard for talking about Hans Zimmer's impact on contemporary film music. It also gets into the influence of digital technology on current film scoring practices, and why there's been a shift from melodically-driven scores to more of an emphasis on rhythm, timbre, and texture:

What I find more intriguing than all of the iconic classical pieces mentioned here (Ok, except for Chinatown) though; is William's score for the Close Encounters... it's not as "fun" as his work on Star Wars but there's more heaviness and mystery to it... you're getting the story of this family and almost-a-Ravel concert at the same time with that film.

A clear, concise, and well-animated demonstration of how meter is defined by the interaction of different pulse levels. The most on-point part of the video is when he talks about how listener disagreements over what the main beat pattern of a song is often stem from people focusing on different individual levels in the hierarchy. The dot diagrams he uses, like he says, are good for sorting that out... and the best part is that the diagrams are simple enough to understand so you don’t need to know how to read music notation to get the basic concept.

Ok, we did the "rules" / syllabus outline........then we did that music doesn't have to even be music at all to convey an attitude inherent in music......next......... lyric writing and the juxtaposition of words.......though this could also be the importance of humor in music....

Since you all liked it so much the 1st time - in general : 3 minute songs, limit the instrumentation, no solos, keep it simple stupid, & avoid politics - let's do it ............ again .........encore! encore! Pop Rules, Part 2 in general:* The act of striking a guitar or hitting a drum, or a piano / keyboard (which again should be avoided, if possible) is implicitly - on some level an aggressive act..........it involves contact - people who play a guitar - only beautifully or are only a lovely pianist - and play Rock and Roll........ are to be looked upon the way you would look at people who don't drink - either they are of questionable taste...... or in the case of being an alcoholic - ill in some way * Pop music - in any permutation - should be sexual - Jazz was played in whore houses, Rock and Roll is literally euphemistic for having sex.........the more intellectual your music, the worse it is..........in the overwhelming majority of cases at least........in Rock below the waist usually defeats above the eyebrows * Men - in general - should not sing in falsetto or mumble - Morrissey and Stipe were exceptions that proves the rule for others.........indecipherable is rarely an attribute in Pop * No one ever listened to a band "because they were an influence" - Husker Du was not great because they influenced Nirvana .........they were exactly as great as they would have been if Nirvana never existed.........the influence is just incidental..... * If your song mentions a wizard, a dragon or an elf - you will be executed, immediately ........Black Sabbath and T. Rex - and people who are covering their particular Wizard songs - are exempt "High noon, oh I'd sell my soul for water / Nine years worth of breakin' my back / There's no sun in the shadow of the wizard / See how he glides,.............why he's lighter than air!" - Rainbow, Stargazer

* No one ever listened to a band "because they were an influence" - Husker Du was not great because they influenced Nirvana .........they were exactly as great as they would have been if Nirvana never existed.........the influence is just incidental..... I think this point may need some adjusting. I've listened to bands after hearing that they've influenced a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't like or re-listen to them if their music wasn't any good.

Continuing with the topic of meter... this is the most straightforward, jargon-light explanation of the concept of syncopation that I could find.

Another rhythm/meter-related video covering a specific rhythmic pattern that you know you’ve heard over and over in a ton of pop music.

End of Term Essay Topic : The Economics of Music and Its Contradictions
I will be leaving our school as - Professor Emeritus of Music That Is Actually Good - while we decide whether we will be teaching CRT (Critical Rap Theory) and until the legal charges against me involving sexual misconduct with a piccolo and a slide trombone are resolved ....... I wish our (drunken) graduates this Spring all the best - may you always be more 70s Punk than 70s Prog.........more 80s New Wave than 80s New Age ...........slightly more 90s Britpop than 90s American Grunge.............but definitely......... way more Kim Shattuck than Kip Winger........and I leave you with this: * Any song - if it is sold right or shoved down the public's throat - can (and will) be a hit - any song never given that chance - can (and will) fail......Classic Rock radio understood this, exploited it, cynically sold it and created a nation of zombies.......that still walk among us.....listening to Aqualung and what not...... * Success can kill a great band (Nirvana for one, there's more) as much as lack of success - but bands who actively cultivate a myth - and to do that is very hard to pull off - end up outside the realm of critical analysis and weirdly outside of popular trends too. They instead are bolstered by their myth in the same way that the machinery of the music business operates: - Merit (theoretically), exclusivity / singularity, limited availability ......... which then makes for a successful, delayed critical & in some cases - a financial career .........so much so that these kind of bands infuriate people who never understood their myth(s) in the first place - much less the endurance of those myths: The Smiths, Fugazi, Pavement, The La's, The Stone Roses, The Replacements, The Libertines etc

Not much of a contribution but just dropping this here because Avey Tare has immaculate taste (get into it) and since the board seems to hate Animal Collective, why not hire him on with eternal tenure?

Tried to find a video that focused on harmony as a topic without relying too heavily on music notation (don't let the thumbnail fool you), and this one is a pretty good primer on jazz harmony. It moves quickly, is a little jargon-y at times, and sort of assumes you already know the meaning of certain terms, but I think it’s still fairly accessible for non-musicians to understand the basic gist. He gives a brief explanation at the beginning of how to build chords, and I like how he uses a keyboard diagram as a visual aid to illustrate.
