La La Land director Damien Chazelle will direct a new musical TV series called The Eddy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The drama will center around a club in modern-day Paris, its owner, the house band and "the volatile city that surrounds them."
British screenwriter and playwright Jack Thorne will write The Eddy. Thorne is known for co-writing the This Is England spin-off series with Shane Meadows and creating the supernatural BBC show The Fades. He's also written for the hit teen drama Skins and the original British version of Shameless and recently collaborated with J.K. Rowling on the play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
It's unclear who will write the music for The Eddy, though Grammy-winning songwriter Glen Ballard is attached to the show as an executive producer. Ballard famously co-wrote Jagged Little Pill with Alanis Morissette and has worked with artists like Michael Jackson, Aerosmith, No Doubt and Katy Perry. Ballard also helped write the lyrics for the musical adaptation of Ghost and is reportedly working on a musical version of Back to the Future as well.
The Eddy is currently being shopped to TV networks and streaming services. It's unclear when production will begin or when the series will premiere.
The Eddy marks Chazelle's second major project since the massive success of La La Land, for which he became the youngest filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Director. Last December, it was announced that Chazelle would helm a Neil Armstrong biopic, First Man, that would reunite him with La La Land star Ryan Gosling. Oscar-winner Josh Singer (Spotlight) wrote the movie, which is scheduled to arrive October 12th, 2018. In March, it was reported that Chazelle's long-gestating screenplay for a mystery called The Claim – which he wrote before his 2014 breakout Whiplash – had been finally picked up as well, though it's unclear whether he'll direct.
