I'm all for Scorsese having a grand vision, but this novel just doesn't really lend itself to that. It would be one thing if it were a heavily urban setting with multiple sets (something like Devil in the White City would be more appropriate for that level of production design -- but again, nowhere near $225 million), but this isn't that. Much of this story takes place on Oklahoma prairie expanses. I haven't read the novel, so I defer to your knowledge, but The Revenant doesn't really lend itself to a $135M budget either. That happened because of Inarritu's very specific vision for the movie (remote locations, natural light, long takes, chronological shoot, etc). Now, I realize that it was originally budgeted at $90M and went way over budget, but the point is that the material doesn't always account for the vision. I'm not saying that Scorsese will not be wasteful or that he will make full use of the $225M budget, but I think we should allow for the possibility that (if the budget is indeed $225M) maybe it is at least partially justified by his vision for the movie.

I'm not buying it. Scorsese is not Nolan and Flower Moon is not an action epic filmed in IMAX across the world.

I don't believe this. Not a kind of movie that would require a budget over 100 mil, 150 tops.
I still think Paramount will remain on board.

I'm curious as to why Amazon isn't funding more of these behemoths, given their infinite money.

This is where it's coming from. Is Richard Rushfield credible? I hope this doesn't go to Netflix.

According to IMDb, this has begun filming. Fake news? I was under the impression that it would commence filming around early March, so probably true.

www.indiewire.com/2020/04/martin-scorsese-talks-apple-netflix-distribute-killers-of-the-flower-moon-1202224149/Holy shit, another huge budget for Marty. It's been a tradition for him when he went for big epics, hasn't it? Gangs of NY, The Aviator, The Irishman - I believe all their budgets had ballooned at some point. As huge as a master he is, Marty's certainly in a unique position to be making historical epics with limited box office appeal on such huge budgets. Not too many filmmakers get the green light to do that. I wonder what the final deal may look like. If Paramount and Netflix join forces, for instance, what will that mean regarding the release? Although in these fucking COVID times I won't be surprised if the project gets massively delayed...

That's an insane amount of money for a non Marvel/tentpole movie. For the life of me I can't work out how the budget could possibly be that high.

With Marty searching for a new studio and the coronavirus delay, this movie is not going to be released next year I guess.

Yes, unless he's building a whole town and everything from scratch, and even then I think it would still be less than $200 million, I can't understand why the budget is so high for this project. Usually I would be all about giving Scorsese all the money that he needs to do whatever he wants, but with everything going on and things looking so grim, I wouldn't blame any studio for passing on this project even with Leo as the star.

There's really no reason why this should be over 75M. I don't know what Marty is doing but I want to see this in theaters.

Unless he has some insane idea that we've never seen before, ballooning the budget up to $200 million for that concept is financially irresponsible and I can't fathom how the hell Scorsese is arriving at that budget.

Can't believe Scorsese is taking it into his own hands to eradicate COVID-19 so that we all get to witness his next masterpiece in theaters. Bravo, Marty!

Is the lack of finalized budgeting/financing the reason we haven't heard more about casting? I wanna know who else is gonna be in this.

With the big ass budget now confirmed, I'm gonna have to assume that they'll be de-aging De Niro again. Hale was in his '50s during the events of the film and De Niro's pushing 80. But Sheeran in his 50s was the most seamless de-aging in The Irishman so if that's the direction they're going here I'll be fine with it.
No idea what direction they're gonna go with the movie either. Describing it as a western or "murder mystery" makes me queasy. I wonder how much Scorsese's re-write differs from what Roth came up with... must be a lot if it played into the budget ballooning.
And it sounds like this wouldn't have even started filming in March anyway...

I think it's more that they'll unleash Ferretti's production design to GONY levels, pay handsomely the Native American artisans and crew (also restoring buildings, landmarks, etc.), and have a non-hectic shooting schedule.
