Vivre sa Vie is my current favorite movie but I don't have lineups going back that far so I'll go with Traffic (2000), my #2. Ha! I can't believe this was only two years ago since someone resurrected this I'll go with my current fav Picnic at Hanging Rock, which has been my #1 for quite some time now. I've never gotten out from under its spell. The idea of a surreal mystery film with no answers and only questions divined from the fact that there are no answers is just tantalizing to me. And beyond all that I love the idea of a film examining that unknowability on a human level. The movie is more about what the disappearance means for those left behind than about the disappearance itself. How this one bizarre event lays baresomething in their souls previously unseen and unexpressed and how they cope with it. It's a fun movie to think about. umm, where was I? oh yeah, nominations for Picnic at Hanging RockBest Picture (of course) Best DirectorBest Actress - Rachel Roberts Best Adapted Screenplay Best Cinematography Best EditingBest Production Design Best Costume Design so that's 8 noms and 3 wins, and most of those losses are to Barry Lyndon.and yeah I have Roberts in Lead. I think much of the film, especially the second half, is framed around and revolves around her. She's at the center of everything and the film ends with her tragic fate, which is to say nothing of the fact that Mrs Appleyard's veiled lesbianism is central to the film's themes of sexual repression and liberation, and representative of the reality these girls have disappeared (or escaped) from. No reading of the film is complete without Mrs Appleyard.

Best Supporting Actor, Patrick Fischler I know this thread is ancient but this is a magnificent nom Well deserved too. It might be my favourite less than five minute performance. I'd love to call it a one scene wonder or whatever, but he unfortunately pops up (very) briefly one other time.
In all the fully justified talk about how brilliant Naomi Watts is in the film, the rest of the excellent cast tend to get forgotten about. It's actually a top notch ensemble. It isn't an all time great or anything, but a very fine one indeed.
