Relatively decent for Free Guy, overperformed tracking, that The Suicide Squad drop though... it's a disaster!

Anyone still claiming Will Smith wouldn't have made a significant difference to the performance of The Suicide Squad if he was in it is nuts. Smith’s starpower and Joker were the only points of interest for audiences with the first film.
WB keeps wildly overestimating the appeal/starpower of Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie. Birds Of Prey was a flop as well, but they seem to think audiences love her and that character more than they actually do.

If Will is playing a certain character then there is no doubt that he's part of the reason for the box office success.

The other issue, aside from the lack of big names appears to be that the more comedic violent tone that Gunn attempted appears to be off-putting to a lot of audiences. It's playing more like say Super (that dark superhero flick he made a decade ago), then something like Guardians. And I just feel like it can't be overstated how incompetently run like WB is right now. Like there's a reason that AT&T is looking to sell them, because they are just not a movie studio pushing company. It's crazy how all their wide-released movies in the past year have seen gonzo second weekend drops.

I’d say after MIB International and Independence Day 2..don’t have a sequel to a Will Smith movie without Will Smith..even if it is an ensemble comic book film. Obviously there were other factors as well. What a brutal BO performance for this $185 million film. Probably the last Suicide Squad movie for awhile. John Campea had a good video on why he felt this film underperformed at the box office a few days ago. Similar to the Scott Mendelson Forbes article. After this..Black Widow..and Jungle Cruise along with COVID cases rising again if studios are trying to figure out what to do with their remaining big money studio movies that still are yet to be released. Do they push back the James Bond movie and Top Gun: Maverick again?

Dune I get, given how much they've already pumped into it, but that new Matrix movie doesn't even have a trailer yet. Decisions, decisions!!!

That one as well. Although wasn't The Matrix 4 one of the WB 2021 releases they were going to release on HBO Max the same day it got released in theaters?

This day and date HBO Max shit is laughable. It will never work for a film that isn't a masterpiece, and that movie would make more money in theaters alone.

Yes it was, which makes the situation all the more complicated I have to imagine.

Well..unfortunately COVID is going to be a problem for the forseeable future imo..and I'm talking about years ahead. Quite a dilemma for the studio execs..but hey..that's why they get paid extremely well.

All signs are pointing towards Dunes box office getting fucked with this HBO Max simultaneous release.

Well I think it's clear from those numbers audiences don't like Suicide Squad as much as the initial online response appeared. It wouldn't have dropped like that if people liked it and were seeing it again and there was good irl word of mouth.
COVID isn't helping but audiences just not being interested in these movies has to play into it as well. Suicide Squad always sounded like a bomb without Smith or Joker as has been said many times and Free Guy's budget should have been like half of what it was. Not sure why they were thinking Ryan Reynolds could open a big budget non IP action movie like he's Tom Cruise or The Rock. Anyway, the point being I wouldn't count Bond or Dune out yet. Those are both much bigger events than any of these movies.

Im confused by the Suicide Squad title. For the sequel, they just got rid of "the". Is there an explanation?

Free Guy had a good Saturday increase. At least that's something positive. I could also see it legging to 100m.

Never in a million years would I have thought that Free Guy would end up beating The Suicide Squad. Godzilla v. Kong is the only film that went relatively unaffected by this.
