Been wanting to see this classic for quite awhile now, finally saw it yesterday. It has a reputation as a very funny comedy, however, I found it to be more serious than I had assumed. There are a few amusing moments but then it veers off into some domestic violence I wouldn't expect from a comedy. I suppose 50's audiences found Judy Holliday's accent funny, which it is, most of the laughs come from her. She deserves all the praise she's ever received for this role.
The Broderick Crawford character is meant to be stupid, and yet he's amassed a great fortune and runs multiple companies? He loves Billie dearly and smacks her around and involves her in his illegal shenanigans? This guy is a mess!
I enjoyed this movie though. It wasn't the screwball comedy I was expecting, but it made me think about books and learning and stuff like that there! Judy Holliday is a treasure that left us way too soon.

Oh, I also watched the 1993 remake right after, it's a thing I like to do. Not as bad as reputed to be, John Goodman is great as per usual, but Don Johnson seemed lifeless here. Melanie Griffith does a solid job as Billie. More than a few changes were made, some were good, like the restaurant scene where they sang about the amendments.

It's a movie with fantastic dialogues. Funny, but yes, also serious. Haven't seen it in a long time.

Gloria Swanson was Robbed!!! No. Bette Davis was robbed. Still, Swanson was better than Holliday.

It's a real shame that this film is really only discussed in terms of whether Holliday robbed Swanson or Davis. And while I prefer Swanson in the year overall, Holliday is my runner-up and makes for a very deserving winner. She's luminous, lighting up the screen in a way very few were able to do in that era, and she has phenomenal chemistry with Crawford, who is himself underrated for his work here.

some are just butthurt certain others didn't win an oscar at all. Yeah, but if Swanson had won, would we ever have gotten those brilliant Carol Burnett skits? "My fans, Max! MAX! MY FANS!!!"

Holliday was really good in this. She carried what I thought was a boring film. I can understand why she won. Having watched other performances by her, she had quite a talent but didn't make a huge impact on screen with only 8 films. Judy won the gold, but Gloria got icon status. By the way, I loved how both Judy and Gloria were together watching the Oscars on TV in a cafe in NYC .

It's a good film. Very amusing at points. Holiday's Oscar wins is actually kinda underated, she really lights up the screen in her role, though I'm not sure she deserved to beat Swanson.

It's a pleasant movie and good genre rom-com. Holliday was good but her beating Davis/Swanson was ridiculous.

An interesting film that defines morality and intelligence for the astute viewer to question.

I haven't seen it in a while but I remember being mostly bored by the whole thing. Fine performances were kind of the reason why I stuck with it till the end, with Broderick Crawford stealing the show.
