^ good shit
I just watched The Quiet Man. I like John Ford a lot but I couldn't seem to get too deep into this one. It was solid enough and beautifully shot but Ford's occasionally maudlin, romantic tendencies can be too much for me. I liked it a lot more than his other deeply melodramatic How Green Was My Valley though, which I mostly despised.

Re-watch of Easy A
I honestly like this movie more and more every time I watch it, which has to be approaching double digits by now. I've bumped my rating for it to a 9 from an 8.5 and moved it one spot up to my #4 of 2010.

The Red Turtle, which was quite good! For me it was a more engaging artistic experience rather than an emotional one. I really enjoyed how the story was told through pure visuals, but the narrative itself didn't exactly captivate me to the extent that I would've loved. The plot felt both moving and slightly detached and calculated at the same time, but I still appreciated this quite a bit. Just wanted something more. Which is honestly what I can say about pretty much every animated film of 2016 that I saw.

Caught Miss Sloane earlier today. The ending does kinda let the whole thing down, but good lord, Chastain is incredible.

A whole trio today....
Sarah's Key (2010) well-acted, harrowing, well done
The subject Was Roses, brilliantly performmed by all three players
Summer Wishes Winter Dreams (1973) Also exceptional in the acting department and deeply touching.

Hurricane Bianca (2016) As a Drag Race face I kinda felt obliged to give this a look, and I had reasonable expectations...unfortunately they were too high. 4/10
Re-Watch: Kick-Ass 2 (2013) Such a let down after the fantastic first film, but it isn't necessarily bad. 6/10

scott barley's Sleep Has Her House from tao films. astonishing stuff. i think it could use some trimming here and there, but this is definitely all of what the slow cinema movement is about (although i guess it's more purely avant-garde than slow but eh s e m a n t i c s). some incredible images and juxtapositions, plus the soundtrack is just beautiful and aural and everything lovely. pleaseeee go check it out, it's at the place in my SIG. Saw this last night in complete darkness and thought it was amazing and otherworldly. I particularly like how Barley constantly plays with light/darkness, silence and noise, stillness and turmoil, peacefulness and eeriness; breathtaking dynamic range. Seeing how every scene slowly dissolves into another is also a thing of beauty and the sound design is earth-shattering. Thanks for the rec, I may end up buying the whole selection soon.

Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen. Veronika's monologue near the end is surely one of the most extraordinary sequences in all of film.

Finally got around to seeing The Red Turtle right before it left theatres. Such a beautiful movie. Not sure if it really offered that much in terms of theme though. For now, a 7.5/10 but it might change as I think more about it

Friend Request (2016) Pretty run of the mill modern horror, a mildly fun but instantly forgettable watch. 5/10

Wings of Desire. Perfect timing, considering I've recently been obsessed with Peter Falk (and Columbo and that). Uniquely beautiful, deeply poetic, richly detailed -- even if a little air comes out of it at the end.
