The Force Awakens shockingly did not win in 2016, Rogue One was definitely Runner-Up last year (that or Doctor Strange), and since then, the last Star Wars film to win an Oscar was Return of the Jedi.
WETA's work on the Planet of the Apes films is revolutionary and improved with each film. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was definitely second to Hugo in 2012 and it almost stole it from Interstellar in 2015.
Both film franchises have been second-fiddle for so long, I imagine nothing else beating them for this honor this year. I honestly don't know what could. Maybe Blade Runner 2049? Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? Justice League? Alien Covenant?
