Azkaban is the best chance for HP franchise to get a BP nom. I guess not. Surprised Incredibles got in. I'll take it. Yeah, the movie underperformed in general. Missing cinematography (which should have been a cinch) was troubling, and then both Oldman and Thewlis missed. So I didn't have the highest expectations after that.

I didn't expect MA to lap it up but hoped Cuaron's name would get it a BP nom. Welp.

I was seriously hoping for Wong Kar Wai's 2004 in here. I'm legit shocked it missed for cinematography

here I was worried Shaun of the Dead was going to take too many noms when I should have been afraid of Harry Potter and Spider-Man 2 at least Zhang Ziyi got in there at least once, and Kevin Bacon, and Moreno, and Mean Girls, and the Sideways gang, and those original songs are pretty good. Although Bourne Supremacy continues to be one of the most underrated action films of all time and that supporting actor lineup is a huuuuge mess. And although I did still appreciate Aviator on rewatch, I really could've done w/o the obligatory Blanchett nod over Meryl Streep and Daryl Hannah. That perf doesn't hold up, gang, give it another look.

Spider-Man 2 made it into Best Picture? Really? A bit disappointed that Million Dollar Baby underperformed here (I mean, not even a nom for Stunt, Fight or Dance Choreography? And nothing for Eastwood?). Kill Bill Vol. 2 also deserved better, but oh well, at least Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Sideways are in the main categories, and most of my acting nominees made it.

Holy shit, this might be the best batch of nominations I've seen yet. Of course, some big misses for me with A Very Long Engagement missing BP, Edgar Wright and Jean-Pierre Jeunet missing Director, Ethan Hawke missing Actor, absolutely SHOCKED that Daryl Hannah missed Supporting Actress (and Kill Bill: Vol. 2 generally under-performed here, though I'm okay with that), and of course just Mean Creek getting shut-out completely sucks. But all that Spider-Man 2 love (Raimi!! Sargent!!), A Very Long Engagement over-performing in a great way, Jon Brion in Score & "The End of an Act"/"A Waltz for a Night" in Song, a make-up line-up that FINALLY makes sense(!!!), that Choreography/VFX line-up (very shocked Sky Captain got two nods, but they're so deserving even if the movie is a snoozefest), and The Village getting some well-deserved love. But the two best parts?! ROSEMARY MOTHER-FUCKIN' HARRIS & PHILIP SEYMOUR MOTHER-FUCKIN' HOFFMAN!!!!!!!! So proud of us.
