To be fair, that's before he had that Chernobyl/The Last of Us clout. He couldn't really afford to just casually take his name off projects.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Honestly, I want to be excited about this but all the behind-the-scenes scrambling just doesn't stoke any confidence.

I mean, sure, that's what I expected. I actually don't mind Kevin Hart here from what we see of him. If he's going to be the grounded member of the crew, that's a nice change-up.

I think it looks pretty bad. CGI looks ropey, none of the super-basic jokes land, and the attempt to market it like it's a Guardians Of The Galaxy movie (right down to the trailer music) gives a serious air of desperation. I'm always glad to be proven wrong (and shitty trailers have sometimes produced good movies) .But just on what I've seen so far ( and the screenwriter doing an Alan Smithee) makes me think it'll be providing competition for Madame Web at next year's Razzies.

Why did Blanchett agree to do this? This looks like a trainwreck.

Why did Blanchett agree to do this? This looks like a trainwreck. My guess. The money. And she gets to be lead. It's super hard for actresses Blanchett's age to get offered big budget films where they are the lead. So it would have been flattering for her on that level alone to be offered this (her role is supposed to be played by a younger actress), even if she knew it was a piece of shit. I suspect when the offer came in, Blanchett's usual quality control went out the window, and she made a decision to go for the big budget lead that's probably given her her biggest payday in years. She's holding her nose and taking the money.

I’m just wondering the over/under of short jokes for Kevin Hart we’re going to get here.

It is sad that even an actress of her calibre - widely recognised as the no.1 talent of the generation - doesn't get offer big bucks.

But yeah, I get what you're saying. Still, Blanchett's net worth is apparently in the region of 95 million dollars, so it's not as if she'll ever be on the breadline . It could have way more to do with being flattered as 54 year old woman to be offered the lead role in a big budget sci-fi action movie that usually would have been offered to a much younger actress ( Lilith her character in the Borderlands video game, is supposed to be late 20's or early 30's. So this is the kind of role Jennifer Lawrence or someone around that age should be playing). Maybe it was just the appeal to her ego that swung it.

I think another reason for Blanchett doing this is that she probably had a good time working with Eli Roth on "The House with a Cock in Its Walls" or whatever it was and thought it'd be nice to make another genre movie with him, this time on a bigger scale. She's not above broadening her horizons in terms of populist fare.

I know he's up to his neck in DCU projects but I can't stop imagining how much better this would look with James Gunn at the wheel. He nails the quirky teamwork-driven comedy-action adventures with an eclectic cast of characters. Roth directs trashy horror flicks (and I say that as someone who enjoys trashy horror flicks). Why on earth was he hired to make this.

also, I haven't seen Madame Web yet but I can safely say nothing in it is as embarrassing as that Claptrap bit at the end of this trailer. That's Bumblebee pissing on John Turturro in Transformers levels of cringe.

Her entire rep is based on this idea that "she can do anything" - almost no actor has it and of course that isn't true for ANY actor but she carries herself like that.........she is not like DDL actually - who people compare her to for talent - DDL picked his spots .....she often wings it in ways he never would..........and she's not like actors who take the cash only.......her entire film persona is she can do it all better than anyone........ This looks headache inducing but ......well no one can do everything
