One of the best prison movies ever? The ending was just heartbreaking!

MASTERPIECE. In my top 50 of all time and one of my favorite prison films. And it has one of the best endings I've ever seen. So gut punching.

An incredible film. One of the numerous gems of that great year 1960. Prison movies have an inherently exciting element to them anyway, but this is definitely one of the stellar examples of how to do such movies right. The lack is music is a particularly good choice, bringing an immense sense of immediacy to the story. It's awesome.

The sheer number of amazing classics is just tremendous. Le trou, Zazie dans le metro, The Virgin Spring, Peeping Tom, Psycho, La dolce vita, L'avventura, Spartacus, Rocco and His Brothers, The Apartment, A bout de souffle, La ciociara, The Sundowners, Eyes Without a Face, HOLY FUCK. You can throw a stone and you'll hit an awesome movie. And what do we have now? Fucking cartoon remakes with Emma Watson

The story is extremely realistic and has no cliches and does not provide information from the past of the prisoners.

I thought it was good but not as amazing as most people make it.

It's an interesting incremental progress movie; a prison escape tutorial with problem solving. No music score, and none needed. Before theatrical release, 24 minutes were cut and the footage is lost. Seems like every year I discover another pretty good movie from 1960; the latest one is The Ninth Circle.

Fantastic film. So intense. Sad that it is not better known.
