Iron Eagle wasn't bad, at least from what I remember. My dad was a big fan of action, war, and western movies, and I remember Iron Eagle being one of the three movies that a local drive-in was showing in a row. I think the first one was something for kids. The second one was Iron Eagle, and I think I fell asleep for the last movie. I have to go with Top Gun here though.

Top Gun. Iron Eagle was a pretty mediocre military plane action movie, only highlighted by a good Louis Gossett Jr. performance (the fact that this and Jaws 3D were the best roles he could get post Oscars is a damning indication of Hollywood's lack of great black roles), and a decent Basil Poledouris score. Somehow it was able to spawn a franchise. I'll also admit I'm a bit of a Sidney J. Furie apologist, at least pre Superman IV disaster.
Amusingly enough it actually somehow cost more then Top Gun. I mean the aerial shots and action scenes weren't bad, but Gun just blew it out of the water in every conceivable way.
