Thought this deserved it's own thread. What a great movie and pleasent suprise. Steinfeld needed a role like this badly. Loved her so much in True Grit but has steuggled with good roles since. She was so fantastic here. The supporting cast was all reallt great also. They are a bit under the radar with Steinfeld owning the film, but they deserce credit as well.

Yeah, I was astonished by how much I loved it. Saw it for free a few days before it officially came out and I had this weird warm feeling when it was done. Agreed on Steinfeld. I keep saying it's her best role since True Grit. The rest of the cast is good too.

Just saw it yesterday, really impressed me! Steinfeld definitely shone through, but Sedgwick, Jenner and in particular Harrelson all had great moments. One of the better films in this genre recently for sure, and a directorial debut, so positive stuff all around!

It's an incredibly mature film in the way it faces its themes and gives, in my humble opinion, a very good example. Loved it.

Loved it. Felt super honest and genuine, Steinfeld was incredible, the script was equal parts fun and sad. Just an excellent film. #9 of the year.

She was good in it and it verged on being good and treating teen sexuality in a somewhat mature way only for it to be boiled down by its own cliche conventions.

Steinfeld was nom worthy tbh If Ellen Page can get nominated for Juno, then Steinfeld deserved a nod, too. Somewhat similar characters, though IMO Steinfeld's characterization was more realistic; Page was stylized, to say the least.

I don't think the movie is anything particularly special, but Steinfeld is amazing in it and definitely deserved a nomination. She's my #3.

Steinfeld deserved way more attention and really should've been seen as Stone's closest competitor for the Globe, way better than the other nominees IMO. I would've had her ahead of Streep, and also higher than Negga (although only just). The film, well, it was slightly underwhelming, particularly as it was wrapping up, but Steinfeld's performance never lost power.

It was a good film and Hailee Steinfeld was really great, in a less competitive year she would have deserved a nom

Yes, after making a comment about the Globe category, I then went on to compare her to the Oscar nominees. Sorry that wasn't clear, but I'm not an idiot.

It was unclear. A better follow-up sentence would've been: "I would've had her ahead of Streep for the Oscar, and also higher than Negga (although only just)."

I've seen it twice and really enjoyed it even though it mostly loses its bite and appeal at the very end. It's certainly a lot better than Lady Bird IMO. A hilarious, often resonant ride with a great turn by Hailee Steinfeld and a game Woody Harrelson in supporting. Unfortunately the rest of the cast is mostly really bland or fake. Everything about the production feels a bit outdated and generic, but it's brimming with life underneath, which makes this a fun little flick very much worth seeing.

I kind of liked it, it's very funny and Steinfeld is good. I slightly preferred it to Lady Bird, Ronan is better than Steinfeld but I think this has the better script. Both 7/10s.

Most of the power of this film comes from the character of Nadine that Kelly Fremon Craig and Hailee Steinfeld create. There are times when the film feels disingenuously silly (oh the guy who has a crush on her that she's been blowing off just so happens to be incredibly rich, cool), but Nadine herself never ceased feeling painfully real. A teenage girl desperately trying to find some kind of validation, anything at all to reassure her what she feels regarding her personal insecurities, her mother, her brother, etc. are real but everything will be okay anyway. Even better than that is recognizing feelings are real, but that doesn't always mean it's reality.
I honestly don't even think of this and Lady Bird being similar beyond them being centered on teen girls with difficult relationships with their mothers. This film feels much more in the John Hughes vein of teen films with an emphasis on heightened, dramatic displays of teenage emotion (which for most John Hughes teen films featured more of the conflict than anything externally happening to the characters) and a clean coming-of-age arc. Lady Bird feels more like something like The 400 Blows, the trouble having just as much to do with the circumstances the character finds themselves in as well as their own naïveté and is less about finding a happy ending so much as just learning how to get by more or less okay. Totally different ambitions really. I'd say I prefer Lady Bird by a tad but Hailee Steinfeld's great work keeps it close for The Edge of Seventeen and makes it well worth watching.

I love it. My #5 of 2016. Steinfeld is magnificent, and I found myself relating a little too much to Nadine. The rest of the cast is equal parts funny and charming.

A decent film that I really enjoyed, especially the scenes between Steinfeld and Harrelson that add a welcome bit of bitter comedy.
