Most of the winners this decade have been mediocre. I like Birdman well enough...Spotlight and Moonlight are decent...other than that, Mediocrity City.

Most of the winners this decade have been mediocre. I like Birdman well enough...Spotlight and Moonlight are decent...other than that, Mediocrity City. Lmao both of you are right but you'd expect for them to go like 2007 where they at least rewarded the right timeless and consensus strong choice. |

At the risk of repeating myself (oh, do I do that?) it's the Chariots of Fire of 2019 - British, historical, tech marvel, stiff upper lip stuff - it doesn't suck, it's good, quite good but it's a stunt, and worse one that says nothing even about its subject - nothing on the war itself. But the real bad part is there's two American movies about America this year that would be better merit and representational winners - ok, fine, I didn't like how OUATIH ended but I'd feel far better about it in spirit winning than a crafts show like 1917. If you're going to give it to a British film why don't we just kiss their ass some more: A. Why don't you nominate Pryce AND Hopkins instead of TWO yanks Dafoe and DeNiro? Oh wait..... B. Give f'n Daniel Day Lewis THREE Oscars then - oh wait - piss off! C. Rename the awards something more British, like the Crisps! D. Split the difference and give the Oscar to the far better Parasite.  |

The more I think about it the more I think it really ought to win. Outside of Birdman and 12 Years a Slave it would be better than any BP winner this year. Way, way worse things have won in the past.
