I'd say definitely lead .Don't understand why so many people think it's a supporting role. John Gallagher Jr is supporting in my opinion.

Supporting the fact that some of is action stay a secret to the viewer make it really hard to have an argument as a lead.
It is really Mary Elizabeth Winstead character story.
